The treatment of minorities and the disadvantaged

QOTD: “You should never wear your best trousers when you go out to fight for freedom and truth.”

Went to pay my cable bill today. A man whom I presumed to be homeless approached me from behind as I was waiting in line. He talked to the guy behind me and pulled at my checkbook, which I had clasped in my hands behind me. He meant no malice, and was doing it for attention and entertainment. His speech was topically irratic and many of his sentences were incomplete. He told me to eat. I told him to eat. He told me to eat carrots. "Carrots?" I asked, somewhat surprised at the specificity. Told me to eat fresh carrots. Carrots with ranch. Since I have something of a rather strong distaste for ranch, I placed little stock in the rest of what he had to say. He said, quite unclearly, that he used to be active military. Said he didn't have a mother or father. Asked me if I had and brothers or sisters. Told me to talk to them face-to-face and not to call them. He offered me a large handful of change, which I refused. He was very difficult to understand and most of his speech was unintelligible. He wandered off toward the people sitting behind me waiting on people in line. The hick was rather aggressive with him. "I don't want you around me," he asserted forcefully, "So you need to get away from around me." The man rambled nonsensically - but harmlessly - at him, and then stumbled his way out the front door. I should've asked for his name.
