QOTD: “Try to keep things in perspective. Fifty years from now, kids in history classes will be yawning over what panics us today.”
Madonna has debuted a limited edition set of wines, which I'd be more than willing to get my hands on. Unfortunately, shipping wine to Mississippi is illegal. Since
Drew makes visits back to MS, I considered shipping the wine to him for him to courier, but shipping wine to Florida is also illegal. As a matter of fact, the only states that permit wine shipments are Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, West Virginia, and recently, New York and Michigan, permitting the county to which the wine is being delivered is not a dry county. In case you weren't counting, that's 14 states out of 50. That's 28%. Talk about an e-commerce nightmare. In some cases, shippers face significant charges. For example, shipping zinfandel to Tennessee is a felony offense.

Why?
Apparently there's some throwback from the days after Prohibition was repealed that had to deal with taxation and whatnot, but it's caused a serious problem now that wine consumption, and namely, production, has gone up in the United States. Knowing this doesn't help me get my wine, though. Really, all it does it make me more frustrated in not only this backwater state, but also our lackluster federal government, whose rules and regulations are not managed to optimize commerce, free trade, and the happiness of its citizenry. I'm moving to Europe where I can get wine in the mail and be shocked by the authority of the politzei.
