Book meme

Jan 19, 2011 14:05

So I'm not moved in yet, due to various elements, the main one being that the place I'm supposed to move into has no space for my stuff. At all. Either because my roommate is taking up my space ::glares:: or the former room occupant never took her stuff. Luckily, IRL I live close enough to the school that going back home for the rest of the week wasn't a problem (physically. Emotionally, my mom and I are ready to kill each other) though I was planning on being back home Tuesday and Wednesday nights anyways. :((((((

In the meantime, have a book meme from
teachwriteslash and
rift_bound :D

1. Favorite childhood book?
Anything written in the Tortall 'verse by Tamora Pierce

2. What are you reading right now?
The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins for the ninth or tenth (twentieth?) time while waiting for Ashera's Curse to be available on Kindle

3. What books do you have on request at the library?
Nothing at the moment

4. Bad book habit?
Reading while walking. If I know where I'm going and it's longer than a 5-min walk, sometimes I'll just bring a book to keep my mind occupied.

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
The last two books in the Vampire Academy series

6. Do you have an e-reader?
Used to have a Kindle, it broke. Got a replacement Kindle under warranty, it also broke. (note: the floor is tougher than a Kindle) Currently have yet another Kindle on order using birthday money, as the warranty expired back in 2009 and I couldn't be bothered to get a new one as RL was kind of eating my face until recently, and because I have the Kindle app on my phone.

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
Depends. Usually one at a time (ignoring any schoolbooks), though on my Kindle I used to be in the middle of at least two or three at once.

8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
Well, no, as I started reading fanfic long before then, though now I read more online than print.

9. Least favorite book you read this year (so far?)
I don't really know... If I don't like a book and can't get into it, I just stop reading it... also I've liked all the books I've read in 2011 so far.

10. Favorite book you’ve read this year?
The Hunger Games series (in both 2010 and 2011 so far, though my reading of 2011 has consisted of equal parts HG rereads and fanfic, with some random other stuff thrown in.

11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
Meh, I don't unless it's for school or something (or free on Kindle).

12. What is your reading comfort zone?
Fiction. The more fantastical or sci-fi it is the better.

13. Can you read on the bus?
I used to. Then I spent a year in Israel where the bus rides were more like roller coasters... I can read in the car though, I get bored too easily to get carsick

14. Favorite place to read?
In bed or curled up somewhere fluffy with a blanket (depending on the temperature)

15. What is your policy on book lending?.
I used to, but then I got back enough of them in horrible condition, so the only person I lend books to (for non-school-related things) is my not-sister, Deb. Case in point, the Huger Games books I'm reading right now are actually hers. I'm waiting until they come out in paperback to buy my own set. Manga is a different story, as I used to have a system set up with eldarwannabe and heliotropean where we'd each lend each other our various manga when we were in school together.

16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
No

17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
::gasps in horror:: I have this odd anal-retentiveness about not marking up books ever.* It was once part of a school assignment to mark certain parts in each chapter where X happened, or you asked question ABC, and I couldn't even put sticky notes in. I had to pull my teacher aside and explain why my book was the only book that didn't look like an exploded parrot even at the cost of it being detrimental to my grade.
*fun fact: when I was a little kid I used to color in the pictures of my Sweet Valley Kids books

18. Not even with text books?
No

19. What is your favorite language to read in?
English since its the only language I can read in without really needing a dictionary. (I can read in Hebrew, but interestingly enough I'm most lacking in science and magical terms, which would be what I most like to read)

20. What makes you love a book?
When I can't put it down and it can still surprise me even near the end. Or once I'm finished with it I can't stop thinking about it.

21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
How much I liked it compared to the type of books I know they like. On that note: The Hunger Games, READ IT.

22. Favorite genre?
Fantasy-Young Adult-Romance

23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?)
Non-fiction, the so-called "Classics" and historical fiction. I just don't like them

24. Favorite biography?
Probably what I've read of I Am What I Am by the Barrowman. Again, I don't really do non-fiction for fun

25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
Ones that were intended to be humorous, yeah.

26. Favorite cookbook?
I will always have a special affinity for the Roald Dahl cookbook I got in kindergarden. We read 4 or so of his books and then had a party using the foods from it.

27. Most inspirational book you’ve read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
Umm...

28. Favorite reading snack?
Ice cream. Or anything in reach.

29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Lord of the Rings. The movie was great, my dad's a hardcore Tolkien fan (as are some of my RL friends), so I was expecting more to happen sooner.

30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
Critics? Hah. I rarely trust "professional critics" and officially stop trusting them after they gave The Last Airbender movie a B. NO THANK YOU

31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
If I didn't like a book I say I didn't like it. Unless you're talking about online reviews, in which case I don't review. (However, reading the Breaking Dawn reviews on Amazon was hilarious)

32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?
Japanese. I'm such a fangirl; I'd like to be able to read manga AND understand the nuances without waiting for scanlations. XD

33. Most intimidating book you’ve ever read?
Huh. I don't know. Size doesn't intimidate me because I'm a very fast reader, but probably any books people expect me to read and like.

34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
The Dune series

35. Favorite Poet?
Shel Silverstein. STFU, he's amazing. (And I'm not much into poetry either)

36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
When I've actually got books checked out it's usually >4. When I go to the library I tend to leave with a stack of books, and I usually try to put two on reserve at a time (also to minimize schlepping, as sometimes one of my parents would bring it home from the City)

37. How often have you returned book to the library unread?
It honestly depends. If it's something my mom took out thinking I'd like it because she did, more likely than not it'll be returned unread. If I take it out, it's only because I didn't get to it and know I won't within the next renewal period. (ex: took out 10 or so books before the cruise last year, only had the chance to read about 6 of them, and then I went back to school)

38. Favorite fictional character?
At the moment it's Finnick Odair from THG series

39. Favorite fictional villain?
Probably Mrs. Coulter, from Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series

40. Books I’m most likely to bring on vacation?
Whatever series I'm currently reading, though now I bring also my iphone for my Kindle app and fanfiction

41. The longest I’ve gone without reading.
Maybe a day or two? I was either sick or on vacation with my family and just didn't have time. Though I usually can't get to sleep without reading for a little bit first.

42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
Jane Eyre. I think. In 12th grade every English class but mine read it that year, and my then bf, Jon, along with a lot of others gushed about it. I couldn't get past chapter 10.

43. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
Well, how close is it to my face and how long have I been reading?

44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
Dunno. I HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIES THOUGH ::crosses fingers::

45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
Harry Potters 4 and 6

46. The most money I’ve ever spent in the bookstore at one time?
A LOT. HURR DURR (I spent over 400$ on textbooks once...)

47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
Rarely. I only tend to do that if it's a series and I want to see if it says "The End" at the end or if there are going to be more books. Or if I'm really bored but need the motivation to get through it

48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
If I've been struggling with the book anyways. However I happened to have just started and stalled on Outlander when the whole Diana Gabaldon fanfic=rape wank broke out last year. It was slow reading for me anyways, so I was probably looking for an excuse to stop reading it as my parents loved the series, but even now I refuse to support her by letting my parents buy the books for me. If they bought them for themselves that's fine, but I don't want them.

49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
I group by series and how much I liked them. The series' I liked the best are on the shelf that was easiest for me to get to (at the time. I'm almost a foot taller now, LOLZ)

50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them?
Keep. Why would I give a book away once I'm done with it? If I didn't want it that much I wouldn't have bought it in the first place, or I would have taken it out of the library. (Schoolbooks excluded, of course)

51. Are there any books you’ve been avoiding?
Host by Stephanie Meyers and my calculus textbook

52. Name a book that made you angry.
That I can really remember? Harry Potter 5, when Sirius was killed. I almost threw it out the window. I think I was 13? Oh, and Emma, by Jane Austen, which boiled down to I wanted to reach into the book and choke the main character.

53. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
Huckleberry Finn. But that's probably because I'm convinced he and Tom Sawyer were epically gay for one another, and then I proceeded to write my final paper on that book about it. And The Shawshank Redemption, (I know it's a short story, shut up) because it's by Stephen King at that point what I knew about him is his stuff would scare the shit out of me (thanks, mom).

54. A book that you expected to like but didn’t?
The World Without Us. It's a book about what would happen to the planet if one day humans suddenly just vanished, sounds awesome, was SO BORING. Also The Hobbit. I expect I'll be lynched for this by some of my friends, but I just couldn't get into it. I think I was about 100 pages in and there was still nothing but tedious description of setting? BLECH.

55. Favorite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
Young Adult novels. I just tend to like them better than the "Adult" novels my mom is always trying to get me to read, and I don't care. I AM A KID AT HEART.

In other news, my mom was yelling at me about something stupid the other day (probably related to packing) and I happened to be going through my purse at the time. Since she had been carrying on all day I took out my sunglasses, put them on and told her to deal with it. She was not amused.
