Health and Habits Update

Back in Feb, I had all the usual lab tests done and my A1C (which is a test that estimates your average blood sugar level for the past 2 - 3 months, based on how heavily your red blood cells are coated with sugars) was 11.9.  Now, for those who don't know, that's considered dangerously high, and means the diabetes is out of control.  Between 4 and 6 is considered normal.  Alarmed, my doctor sent me to a diabetic specialist, and since then I've been following a strict regime of insulin injections and data keeping.  Also fustration and research.

But, last week I went in for a follow up and my A1C was down to 8.4!  My specialist was thrilled, and I was quite pleased myself.  So, that was good news.  I am to maintain what I'm doing, and we'll follow up again in July.

I'm trying to develop better habits, to not procrastinate so much, and especially to stick with tasks until they are completed, which I have always had a tendency to not do.  So I starting using a website/app called Habitica, which is set up like an adventure RPG.  You set tasks and goals, and when you complete them, you get XP.  If you miss them or you do something contrary to your goals, you take damage.  It's pretty fun.  There's challenges that you can do and quests to "go on", gear to buy and pets to collect.  I'm currently a level 15 Rogue.  :)  It's helped to keep me motivated, and probably helped a lot with getting my A1C down, because I put my insulin regime in as tasks, and stuck to them so that I could check them off.

So, that is helping.  I'm getting things done on a more regular basis, and that can only be good.

Next medical appointment is Thursday with the cardiologist.  I've now had an EKG, an Echocardiogram and a PET stress test.  So hopefully this will be the appointment when they will tell me if there is anything wrong or not.
