After a couple of adventurous detours and late dinner at a local diner found in a town that was little more than the place where two roads made an intersection, they had made it back to the highway and were now steady on the way home to Paragon City.
Amber enjoyed driving, and she loved seeing new things, so the weekend trip to Niagara Falls had been fun and exciting. It had been a special treat for her to see Terecito and Takuya enjoying themselves on their first foray away from Paragon, and to spend time with Ricky that didn’t involve a mission or some deadly danger to be faced. They’d held hands as they walked along the observation platforms on the American side of the Falls, getting to know each other better, while their two companions explored and took pictures. They all spent the late afternoon on the almost carnival-like boardwalk, playing games and laughing together and trying out different foods. And then the fireworks show over the Falls! It had been amazing and beautiful.
Now, she watched the road carefully, as lights and small towns along the highway shimmered in the night as they passed. One hand on the steering wheel, her other rested comfortably on Ricky’s leg as he sat as close to her as the car’s features would allow. His strong fingers intertwined over the top of hers and occasionally he would rub the side of her hand with his thumb. She glanced frequently at his profile, ever-changing as the lights moved across his handsome features, highlighting the angles of his face, reflecting gently in his eyes.
They had music playing, but it was currently turned down to a quiet level only just audible over the steady thrumming of the wheels on the road, so as not to disturb the occupants of the backseat. Terecito and Takuya had both fallen asleep at some point after they left the diner. Ter had slid sideways until his head rested against Takuya’s shoulder and eventually Takuya had tipped his head to pillow against Terecito’s.
Amber checked on them often in the rear view mirror, and she wished she could get her camera out and take a picture of them. She smiled to herself, a quiet soft smile that was only the merest indication of the incredible love and maternal content she felt in her heart right then. It all felt so perfect and idyllic, from the two boys sleep in the back, to the man holding her hand comfortably and companionably. As satisfied as she was as a heroine, Amber knew that this - this type of familial love and comfort - was what she wanted someday. Someday.
She also knew that she was very lucky, because tonight she didn’t have to wait for someday. Thanks to her men, she was blessed to be able to know that wonderful feeling of family now. As she drove toward home, she was happy, with Terecito and Takuya in the back seat and Ricky beside her.
