Perk #25 of being a single gal: No one looks at you funny when you eat Ben & Jerry's straight out of the carton.
Okay, so I caved. I was at HEB and the crowds were awful and I was having a panic attack in the middle of the milk/egg/butter freezer case aisle and they wouldn't let me buy wine on Sunday before noon and i need the stupid bottle for the Christmas party on Wednesday that I'm hosting (why do I do this, why?!) so I said screw it and bought a pint of Phish Food. I haven't eaten anything due to emotional issues in nearly four months.
It is now 1:56. I'm not going back to the damn store just to buy a single bottle of Mescado or however you spell it. It'll still be there tomorrow after work. If not, then there's Specs just down the road.
Also, if any of you are merlot drinkers, have you tried Ravenswood? The label drew my eye and the description said that it has a background flavor of cherries, plum, and vanilla. Thinking that this would work well with the roast I'm planning on cooking for Christmas Day as part of the stock/cooking broth to flavor up the meat while it cooks. I might not be much of a wine drinker, but I'm really interested in cooking with it. The white wine I mentioned in an earlier post did really well in a chicken pot pie (I didn't measure it out, but I'd say I probably used about 1/4 or 1/3 of a cup. It was a couple of generous pours.)
While at HEB, I bought a "make-it-yourself" floral arrangment of pine boughs and holly. They had tulips and some other flowers in the example bouquet that sold for an outrageous amount of money, but I like the simple arrangment just the pine and holly made. I have it sitting on the ledge (bar/breakfast nook?) next to the kitchen and it's making my apartment smell pretty. I might not have room for a big live tree, but at least I got to get sap on my hands while arranging it.
I've got a pot of beans soaking. I thought I'd make lunch for my field inspectors to show them how much I love 'em on Tuesday.
Holiday to-do list:
Monday - cook beans and enchilladas for Tuesday. Make fudge for Wednesday. Buy wine for gift exchange and plastic tablecloth for party. Buy non-diet sodas and chocolate chips. I knew I forgot something today.
Tuesday - take tablecloth, floral arrangement and food up to work. Make ginger, shortbread, chocolate chip cookies and a batch brownies for party Wednesday. Prep ham & cheese pinwheels. Arrange tables in conference room after work so I don't have to do it Wednesday.
Wednesday - Bake pinwheels. Take cookies, fudge, brownies, appetizers and gift for party. Roll out tablecloth and put flower arrangement (really, it's just a poinesettia, but still) on gift table, arrange cookies and such on the food tables so that people can start putting their own things on the food table. Party, clean up, bring back non-nommed upon cookies home. Go buy last minute gift for Dad (why do I wait until the last minute again?!)
Thursday - wrap gifts, clean apartment.
I'm feeling kind of sketchy. Aedan's been on my mind lately, so I might make a few doodles of him to try out a few things on my tablet. I changed the pressure sensitivity again and I'm experimenting with using bristol board and just regular drawing paper on top of the tablet to keep the nibs from sliding around all over the place. We'll see how it goes.
Edit because I forgot:
Check out all the other videos, especially the Black Death, Renaissance Men, Beowulf, Spanish Inquisition and French Revolution ones. Where were they when we were learning this stuff in school?
And apparently Cafepress has caught on that I'm fond of Howes. All the ads on other sites are showing me "Team Nathaniel" bumper stickers and magnets. Nice.
Edit Part II:
Working on Aedan sketch, which is turning out to be tons of practice on doing male faces. I'm happy with where this is going, even if I might erase the smudge-shading around the eyes and go for something rougher later on. I haven't decided on a hairstyle either, but something tells me that Aedan is the type of guy that needs to have his hair in his eyes. :) Not finished fussing with his jawline/cheekbones/brow either. I'm going with the drawing technique of making out a bunch of shapes to get everything put together, which is why there's a bunch of lines around his chin. Those will be erased after a while.
