Skating and writing notes

I had a rather good practice this morning, in which I accomplished:

  • A half lutz that, while it was a bit stumbly, took off from the correct edge and went up in the air before coming back down on one foot;
  • A scratch spin that must have had at least five, maaaaybe six revolutions on one foot;
  • A gorgeously silent forward outside three turn at the beginning of a Waltz 8 (my three turns are scraaatchy, although part of that may my entry-level blades);
  • The most perfect execution of the "three crossrolls into an outside circle" exercise I've done; and
  • A salchow that actually had some lift from the free leg going into it.

I nearly got beaned by the novice pair team running choreography after that last one, I was so caught up in thinking about it. I'm sure it wasn't much of a close call for them, but I have no interest in being within ten feet of "in the way" of a fully grown pair team gearing up for a throw jump.

They've been there every time I've been to an early practice for the past couple months--which admittedly has not been often, given recent medical drama--and it's kind of fun to watch them. A bit of a pain, because when they run their program with music once or twice a session, I just give up and get off the ice (see above about not wanting to get in the way of a pair team), so that uses up ~5 minutes of a 45-minute session, but it is inspiring to watch people who know what they're doing doing it.

I broke 27k on the angst fic. Not sure about the current scene I'm writing, though. I feel like it would be silly to overlook it, because it's a really good source of conflict and has roots in the canon, but it's also somewhat hard to do without letting my own opinions get in the way. Enough with the vagueness: The fic is scenes from 1969-1994 in the AU where McMurphy and Richard actually got married at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night..." (but told backwards, because I loved that device in "Holly's Choice"). The scene in question is a fight they have over what Richard, a gynecologist, is going to do after the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Their positions are pretty well laid out in "Holly's Choice," actually, so I can only imagine that that essential conflict between McMurphy's "it's all life!" stance and Richard's empathy for the women who came to him before it was decriminalized would continue.

Speaking of China Beach, I had the most fabulous vid idea for it in the car on the way home last night. It would use a song that's been in my top five for nine years now. Unfortunately, I'd need to actually rewatch a lot of the post-sixties scenes in S4, which I don't love the idea of and was enjoying avoiding with my other vid idea for this show, but it would be super cool.
