Turn, turn, turn

Well, after two weeks on the previous bottles of allergen serum, I'm back to the concentration that gave me such problems before. Yesterday was a "test dose," which is even smaller than the typical first dose, but I still had to double up on antihistamines in preparation for it, and it left me feeling pretty spacey all day. I don't think it was helped by the fact that I'm reading a rather depressing book and writing some pretty angsty fic; all of it combined to make me feel, well, rather cranky by the end of the day.

I had a lesson yesterday afternoon, somewhat unfortunately given the above. Usually I kind of drive my lessons and suggest what I want to work on, but yesterday I just told P, "I'm too loopy to think straight. Please teach me something you think is cool." So we worked on counters, back three turns, spread eagles, and Ina Bauers. It's...going to be a while until I do a counter or a back three on one foot, but she taught me a cool sequence involving counters and back edges and snazzy arms that's fun to do. I also worked on going from an inside to an outside Ina Bauer, which I'd never tried before. I actually succeeded for a couple of seconds until I lost the outside edge, which shocked the hell out of me. I think my thighs are getting stronger.

I realized I never posted about the last four episodes of season three!

Phoenix
KC's "I would do anything for you!" to McMurphy made me do a double take. I...don't know that they've built up their relationship to quite that level, especially given KC's...innate KCness. That said, I liked the episode, and I like that they put their finger on the McMurphy/KC relationship: "If you had a sister, it wouldn't be me." / "And yet here you are."

F.N.G.
OMG, wee baby everyone! McMurphy's innocence and excitement as she gets commissioned in her cute white nurse's outfit back in Kansas is just heartbreaking. And getting thrown into the mass-cal, and then refusing the drink because she "doesn't like the taste"...OH, MCMURPHY.

Her chopping off her hair is something that, had I seen it in a script, I would've rolled my eyes at, but DD made it work.

It was good to see some of Boonie and KC's backstory. And to watch Richard and McMurphy sparking off each other from the very first moment, hee. "I watched Combat too!"

Jan's warning about getting involved with married doctors and how Singer had three days while she had six months left was depressing in the context of what happens in S4. It's almost not the same until, at the very end, it is.

I watched the episode with the commentary track, too, and it was excellent. I didn't realize they didn't yet have autofocus on movie cameras in 1990, so when John Sacret Young pointed out that the pan down from the ceiling of the ward to McMurphy's face was done with a human being manually changing the focus the entire time, I was very impressed. I also enjoyed Robert Picardo's thoughtful contributions. I like commentaries that are just actors telling funny stories or whatever, but he really dug into the writing of the episode, and that was really nice. This was funny too: "Dana is one of the world's great criers. She could cry at the opening of a Walmart if she had to."

I just finished reading Home Before Morning, which is the Vietnam Army nurse memoir the show is loosely based on, and it's interesting to see how many traits and details are indeed pulled from the book. JFK's speech as McMurphy's inspiration is straight out of the book, for example, as is the stuff about nicknames for the different kinds of wounded from the next episode. It's really quite a good book, albeit a bit slow to get going. I would recommend it if the subject interests you.

The Gift
Not their best episode, I think, although I did like Lila getting her own story. It was also nice that her story was about a complex relationship with another woman.

Strange Brew
Okay, I'm going to need to watch this again to understand most of what happened. I think mostly my reaction now consists of "OH DEAR GOD, KC." The show had already implied the broad outlines of what her father had done to her, but the details were...yeah. Can I just say that it was a little on the darkly amusing side that she told everything to Clancy Brown, aka Justin Crowe from Carnivale, who had his own creepily incestuous relationship with his daughter, oh god.
