Fringe 5.04: "The Bullet That Saved the World"

Oct 26, 2012 21:19

Huh. Well, I have been hoping that Etta would mosey off my screen at some point because I just can't get interested in her and I resent her taking time away from characters I give a damn about, but I was not expecting her to do so like that. Fringe does have a knack for giving you what you want in the worst possible way, doesn't it?

Other than that shocking bit at the end, this was not great, not terrible, in the vein of the other episodes this season. So, a list, mostly focused on things I liked:

BROYLES! YAAAAAAY BROYLES, working the resistance from behind the scenes!

OMG, Walter's, er, file room, shall we say. WITH THE WERECUPINE. Loved the idea of them using their fringey stuff to fight the Observers, loved even more that the creepy skin-growing mist was used. Granted, it wasn't as terrifying as the first time it showed up on this series, but better than nothing.

Noooooo, I was so hoping opening a portal to Redverse was going to be the only way to get to the train station! But now that they've dropped that nice little cowpat of foreshadowing, SURELY we're going to see Redverse at some point this season, right? RIGHT?

For a while, I thought Walter would be the dove, as in Noah's dove returning from her flight to find land, but obviously it's Broyles. Yay Broyles, but that would've been nice symbolism.

Finally we got a hint that, shock, Olivia and Peter are parents when she was talking to Etta about the provenance of the bullet necklace. I think I'm actually starting to believe they had a child.

Guys, the signs in that rain station are bilingual, English and French. Obviously this was filmed in Vancouver. Did the effects budget not stretch far enough to doctor the French into Observerese? (Granted, their effects budget this year is probably three quarters dug out from between the couch cushions and half a box of doughnuts, but still.)

Heh, the family that shoots skin-growing gas at enemies together stays together. Um. Except when they don't, I guess.

The robot Observer learns about love! Didn't September tell them about this already? Also, I get the feeling I'm supposed to be differentiating between the various Observers, but I'm so not there. There are two older ones, right? Windmark and...Weymouth? Waycross? Or is there just one old guy? One of them got blown up while the other watched, but maybe they're the same guy and he just messed with time and moved himself out of the blast radius. Is one of them December with a new name?

Also, speaking of the month-named Observers, didn't September say that Etta was the key to having Observers at all? Didn't they just create some kind of time paradox by killing her? (Although I have a sneaking suspicion that the necklace Olivia took is going to be instrumental in bringing Etta back to life in the last episode.)
