Finally getting around to watching Star Trek: Discovery

Jan 14, 2018 16:32

Wait wait wait, I was led to believe this was going to be the adventures of a goddamn-finally all-female command twosome. Now you kill off the captain? What?

...I'm seriously questioning if I want to watch anymore. Michelle Yeoh's character was the only one I really liked. (Because she's Michelle Yeoh!)

Well, I don't dislike Michael, but she's awfully stiff. Yeah, yeah, raised by Vulcans, but she's not really stiff in that way, just...stiff. (Of course, it's sort of a Trek prerogative for all characters to have sticks up their butts, especially in the first season, so it may be intentional.) Saru is okay, but hasn't had enough to do for me to form an opinion. The Klingons are all kind of indistinguishable at the moment. I feel bad for the actors, who are not only acting behind several pounds of latex, but doing it in a conlang. A really. slow. conlang. where. every. sentence. takes. hours. to. deliver. So far they still have yet to make me give a shit about Klingons, but it's been about two decades and three series and I still dislike them, so this is not surprising. (Also, from certain angles, they look a lot like the Narn and I keep half-expecting G'Kar to start speaking, which is giving me cognitive dissonance.)

In Michael's favor, I did like her banter with Phillippa, friendly rivalry with Saru, and how she out-logicked the computer. That was impressive. I also like that we have a female character in sci-fi with a southern accent. It didn't occur to me how rare that is until I heard it on a few words Michael speaks.

The scene where the helm(?) guy was talking to Michael in the brig and got blown away was impressive. Something about the aesthetics and the suddenness of killing him off made me think, "Yeah, the Fringe crew is definitely behind this."

Nice touch with all the Starfleet ships that arrived at the battle being named after pilots and astronauts.

I get the impression fandom has Feelings about Sarek, but I like him. He's kind of an asshole in that Vulcan way, but I still like him, and I think I might wind up liking his relationship with Michael, weird though it will probably be. (Whoever's playing Sarek is stiff and logical in a more believable way than Michael is. Maybe he's just not laboring under the requirement to be noble.)
