So I'm kinda really
pissed about this Komen thing and I'm not really supposed to be heavy on the activism due to work, but I'm going to do this one thing, because it's a Really Important Thing.
I'm a woman who has been to a Planned Parenthood clinic for women's health services as a teen who was scared out of her mind. I went--entered the door through a metal detector because of threats of violence to the clinic--because I felt I had nowhere else to turn.
And I am just outraged. Outraged at all of this.
In response to Komen, one of my friends (who is an experienced fundraising professional, like, it's his work)
has started a movement to collect donations to Planned Parenthood, Breast Cancer Action, and other community-based charities that offer women's health services, especially to women who struggle to afford it.
17 on Pink The idea behind this is to give--directly to these organizations--whatever you can. The fun thing is having the number "17" in your donation ($5.17! $17.17! $117!).
Then you leave a comment on the post I linked to above (or send an e-mail to them) to let 17 on Pink know you've done so for the tallies.
I've donated. I ask that you, if you can, please do so. This morning on the way to work I was fantasizing about a surge of donations to Planned Parenthood in response to this bullshittery. I wanted to be a part of that. As a woman who has been there.
They were there for me.
For the 170,000 women who used Komen grants to get free breast cancer screenings last year.
Feel free to repost this or link to my post. I also
put this on my tumblr if you'd like to reblog.
