With a little bit of free time lately I've read a few really amazing fics.
Outside the Ring by
i_am_davnee is Laura/Sam, but also very much Laura/Bill, and it's the hot sequel to
War Crimes and
Shell Shocked. And not only is it hot, but it's angsty and a little heartbreaking, and that is really how I like my hot--all twisted up into a well-written package with vivid, beautiful descriptions and real emotional depth.
Roads Left in Both of Our Shoes by
zinke (and yes,
zinke, of course I remember this story!) is something I had the privilege of reading, in its rough form, many months ago. It's a bittersweet post-Daybreak fic that deals with both Lee and Bill's lives and emotional states. The language is gorgeous and expressive, and I felt both of these characters so much. Yes, Lee can be written as a sympathetic character, and she's aced it. Warning: the ending is quite sad, but hopeful, in a way. Read the header before the fic if you're sensitive to sad things (trying not to give anything away).
Also, I took a trip in the wayback machine (exactly a year ago, actually) and read
larsfarm77's
Last Words and
Full Circle this week. Completely blew my mind. It's a Laura-centric A/R fic that deals with the aftermath of New Caprica, and nobody does NC like
larsfarm77. Seriously. There's a hint of femslash in it too--very skillfully woven into the entire thing, asking as many questions as it answers. It's at times horrific and at times achingly sad, but there is a bit of hope lingering in there. Most notable is her characterization of Caprica Six--the story is told in part through her POV.
Finally, and this is a bit of a prod in
mmegiry's and
sunset_leaf's direction to get going on the next chapter...
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy has its prologue up. It's Laura/Richard, but being a Lauraphile, I'm kind of obsessed with "life before the attacks" fic that's realistic and handles this relationship with the care it deserves. And the angst hound in me is enjoying it because everybody knows about the inevitable crash and burn of this relationship--I'm looking forward to seeing that slow, downward spiral through these authors' words.
