It was 2 o’clock in the afternoon, an hour and a half after they have finished lunch, and just like most people who were spending their precious almost-once-every-two-months day-off, Nino wanted to spend it in close partnership with his comfortable bed.
It was 2 o’clock in the afternoon when Nino started hearing the subtle noise of his doorknob being opened amidst the blaring music of his gaming console. Years of training has given him a keen sense of hearing, a blessing in itself since he could anticipate Aiba’s predictably loud entrance. Nino, if he was more rested and clearheaded, would have thought of a more feasible plan to drive Aiba away like, for example, pretending to be asleep. Aiba, despite his occasionally irreproachable happy-go-lucky nature, was actually quite perceptive and considerate when it came to Nino. They have been housemates since their university days, cooking for each other, taking turns with the laundry and the housecleaning, and taking turns slacking off house chores as well when the going got tough.
It was 2 o’clock in the afternoon when Aiba was swiftly able to open the door to Nino’s room. His trained hand was apparently faster than Nino’s sleep-deprived brain this time around. Hearing the game music from across the hall, Aiba knew that Nino was awake.
Swinging the door wide open revealed Nino, his back facing the door, his body crouched on himself forming a letter C, with pillows and sheets forming a fortress around him as if living out the game he was currently playing.
“Hey Nino! Let’s make takoyaki. I bought some ingredients,” Aiba called out happily, lifting the bag he was carrying, quite pointlessly since Nino had his back turned away from the door. Nino merely grunted as a sign of recognition.
Aiba walked in and sifted through Nino’s makeshift fortress to get to him. “Come on, we haven’t eaten takoyaki for soooo long!” The drawn out “soooo” was characteristic of Aiba, which made Nino chuckle despite himself. “But we have just eaten lunch! You’re hungry again? What kind of metabolism do you have? Do you have monsters inside your tummy or something?”
Aiba was taken aback by Nino’s retort, reflecting on it for a while. He steadily placed his hand on his abdomen and carefully palpated for any gurgling made by the alleged monster residing in his tummy. After a minute of inspection, Aiba gave a relieved laugh, “I can’t believe I’m smarter than you, Nino! There can’t possibly be monsters in my tummy! Your gaming addiction has tainted your thinking.”
Nino looked at him in awe, as if he couldn’t believe that Aiba’s baseline stupidity could still go a level higher. “Alright, wow, kudos for actually entertaining the possibility of it.”
“Oh, come on now, let’s have some snacks!” Aiba whined, as he pulled Nino’s arm.
“But I’m still full!”
“But we haven’t made takoyaki in such a while!”
“But we have just eaten lunch!” Nino spat back in exasperation.
“But we are so busy with our jobs, we haven’t even shared a meal for quite some time now,” Aiba muttered.
“We just ate together for lunch,” Nino pointed out as he returned to his game.
“I guess you’re right,” Aiba softly said as he rearranged the pillows back, effectively forming a barrier between him and Nino. He quietly stood up and headed out the door, the bag of groceries on his tow.
The sudden change in Aiba’s behaviour alarmed Nino. He stared at Aiba’s retreating back and noticed the slight hunch of his back and the lackluster of his movements, and Nino couldn’t help but feel guilty. It was obvious that his rejection of Aiba’s offer caused the sudden change in Aiba’s mood.
Nino reasoned to himself that it was his precious day-off and he had every right to spend it the way he desired, be it productive or not, and his decision should be his alone, and not because someone forced him to.
However, the softness and dejection in Aiba’s voice kept replaying in his head. The image of defeat in Aiba’s retreating figure was overpowering his attention to his video game. Nino tossed and turned on his bed to rid his mind of guilt but the act of doing so merely intensified it, reminding him of how Aiba effectively, albeit sadly, rearranged the pillows - the barrier between the two of them, as if stressing the distance between them.
After a couple of minutes staring at the ceiling, Nino heard the distinct sound of metal clanging on the floor. Aiba’s clumsiness was making itself known to the world once again, Nino thought. Aiba who doesn’t seem to have an off switch. Aiba who would always finish what he set out to do, albeit haphazard and clumsy in the process. Aiba who must have missed spending time with Nino.
Aiba was in the middle of chopping vegetables in the kitchen when Nino unceremoniously entered the living room and made himself comfortable on the couch. The single-minded concentration in Aiba kept him from noticing Nino’s entrance right away. Only the eventual blaring of the music from Nino’s game console made Aiba look up.
“Hey, aren’t you going to help me with the ingredients?” Aiba called out despite knowing the answer fully well. For a moment, Nino was afraid that Aiba would just ignore him, harboring feelings of hurt from their previous encounter. Nino inwardly sighed in relief that it was still the same Aiba he knew.
“You’re the one who came up with this idea, do it yourself,” Nino replied cheekily, but despite that, he still stood up from the couch and approached the counter - Aiba’s self-proclaimed territory where he could work on his masterpiece dishes.
As Nino approached with a suppressed smirk on his lips, Aiba knew right away that he was up to no good. He picked up a large piece of tako, apparently a product of Aiba’ brilliant chopping skills.
“Are you planning to choke us both?” he asked as he waved it in front of Aiba, earning him a fond hit on the head.
It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon when the first bite of the takoyaki was eaten. Nino faked choking and Aiba hit him on the head once again.
