ONE Direction were too weirded out by rockers Fall Out Boy to use any of their songs.
The American band were tasked with helping Harry Styles and the lads find a new rock sound.
But what FOB came up with may have been too extreme for the boyband genre.
Chief lyricist Pete Wentz, 35, left, told us: “Last time we were in London we wrote with the guys in One Direction, “It was a great session but I don’t know if Fall Out Boy writes what One Direction wants to sing.
“There’s a certain area of odd that we can stake a place in, but it’s like we have the language of twins. Maybe it’s too odd for One Direction because they didn’t end up using the songs this time."
Oddness seems to be working a treat for the band, who are on course for No 1 with new album American Beauty / American Psycho.
Amazed at their longevity, Pete said: “We’ve evolved, so we still get to play shows with pop acts like Meghan Trainor and Iggy Azalea.
“We are always the odd ones at the party because we are clearly not a band that was put together. But hopefully we are a band who enjoy a pop moment.”
Another UK artist FOB are fond of is Ed Sheeran, 24. Pete laughed: “Ed is a lyrical guy and he tells these intricate interesting stories that you wouldn’t expect from pop music. I’m not sure he would ever take the job but it’s his if we ever need a singer.”
Fall Out Boy embark on a UK arena tour in October.
