Too often classical musicians are so familiarized with the mainstream repertoire that we become cold to the very passion which ignited our zest. It's refreshing to hear a particular interpretation of a work that stirs unspoken depths of emotions to the fore. What a glorious moment of revival awaits the musician when he hears such a performance!
While Bernstein uses the blog title in an entirely different context, the variety of the same notes and rhythms can be realized to produce a global range of emotions, an aspect Bernstein does not cover in his discussion. It's an interesting perception to think within a given work, a variety of triumph, nostalgia, suffering, hope, love, and loss can all be portrayed. My entire day has been made, thanks to a wonderful recording of a work that I previously considered dull and unimaginative.
I hope everyone enjoyed their fourth yesterday. May all your future stripes be red, white, and blue.
