I am twenty-two years old (at least for another six days). Twenty years ago, I was only two. My younger brother had yet been born. I was years away from literacy. Ronald Reagan was president. Since then, in twenty years, two families have occupied the White House. The Bushes and Clintons. Four years of George H., eight Years of Bill, and eight years of George W. Doesn't it seem unnerving that out of hundreds of millions of Americans, two families have had control of the white house for one fourth of an entire lifetime? It scares me to think that if Hillary wins the nomination, it might be close to thirty years before we have a family outside the Bushes and Clintons. Thirty years of my individual life, all decidated to two families of presidents. Then again, perhaps Jed Bush will make a pass after Hillary's term. Thirty six years, maybe? I will be forty in that theoretical instance. Just in time for Chelsea to make her run and become the youngest president in history. Perhaps I'd be fifty before a Clinton/Bush was not in the White House.
Clearly, the American Presidency wasn't designed to be as such. We are at an unprecedented moment in history on so many levels. This is simply one some choose to ignore whereas others find it a bane of politics. The Monarchy lost its appeal because the same family held power, passed down from member to member. Sometimes wives would assume the throne until the offspring were old enough to rule. Sometimes cousins would come in and assume power. Isn't that what democracy is supposed to fight? Yet, here we are, with the opportunity to fight families in power, and one still leads nationally in polls. It simply amazes me. I don't hate Hillary Clinton like many Republicans do, I simply want a breath of fresh air.
Our economy has plunged into turmoil, and talks of recession plague the markets and our thoughts. Analysts say the economy has been spiraling this way for decades. Perhaps since Reagan was president? Bush, Clinton, and Bush, in twenty years, have yet to reverse this problem. Will another eight with a Clinton really fix things? As a democrat, I am prone to believe that a Hillary nomination will cause uproar amongst the Republicans, inspiring conservatives to vote nation wide to ensure a non-Hillary presidency. I firmly believe our alternative as a Democrat, Barack Obama, offers appeal to Independents and Republicans that Clinton would never have. I think he offers fresh blood. I think a non-Clinton/Bush Presidency will bring our democracy to what it once was - families sharing power amongst all American citizens, not just among certain few.
