Witchblade (tv show) - review

Jul 27, 2007 19:28

I just finished watching the last episode of "Witchblade".

This show is based on a comic series.
It's about Sara "Pez" Pezzini, a New York City police officer who comes across an ancient weapon that gives her great power to fight evil.

I read a few reviews which weren't too good since people criticized the show as a bad adaptation of the comic.

Well, I don't know the comic, but this show rocks!
It's really too bad that it was canceled after just two seasons.

(Everything under a lj-cut contains spoilers.)

First Season
What got me hooked to that show was the mentioning of Joan of Arc as one of the bladewielders and all those mysterious chunks about Sara's descent.
Therefor I really liked the Dominique Boucher story arc which starts in the second episode ("Conundrum").

My favorite episode though was "Sacrifice". I totally fell in love with the story of Cathain and Conchobar, and therefor the whole Sara/Conchobar story arc. *sigh*
Thst certainly made the fangirl in me very happy. ;-)
Also, this episode made me wish for a soundtrack. I would love to have the two songs which were written for the show ("The Legend of Cathain" and "Sara") on CD...

But only two episodes later (in "Maelstrom") all the squeeing happiness is over - way too soon if you ask me. But sadly nobody did. ;-)

My favorite character is Ian Nothingham. He's all dark and mysterious but so vulnerable and madly in love with Sara.

"Trancendence", this season's finale was awesome. Although the whole thing about turning back time had me worried. I mean, that way, the whole first season never happened. Sara just got the Witchblade and has to learn everything again. So I feared they would repeat a lot during season two.
But at least Danny didn't get killed. Because Ghost!Danny really annoyed me. *rolls eyes*

Second Season
When I watched the first episode of the second season ("Emergence"/"Destiny") I first thought I started the wrong episode. The first couple of minutes are exactly like in the pilot. It makes sense, if you keep in mind that Sarah turned back time, but it was very confusing. *lol*

I do like the new Ian Nothingham. He's all dark and dangerous and most off all totally into Sara. And this time it's even more hopeless then in season 1.
I think that "Consectatio" was probably the best Nothingham episode this season. The whole story about Gilgamesh and Saron or Ian and Sarah as I should say is just great.

The great thing about this show is how they managed to use the same characters to build totally new stories (like in "Consectatio" for example).
That was one thing that I was worried about when they ended the first season with turning back time so that the whole season hadn't actually happened. But they really did a good job on that.

And finally in "Palindrome" Sara meets Conchobar again. I thought this would never happen. But evil as authors for tv shows are as soon as she has him back he is in a coma.
As Sara says herself that's better than being dead, but the fangirl in me is very unhappy with this. *pouts*

The second season finale had me worried for a little bit. I really feared they would end it with an evil cliffhanger. And just when I thought I worried for no reason there it is - the cliffhanger. Well, thanks a lot! But at least it wasn't as evil as I expected. But I really wished there would have been another season or mini-series to end that storyline.

But anyway, all in all a great show which I can only recommend to anyone who is into fantasy/mystery.
