A Hotel Room in Nowhere, Rhode Island. Late Tuesday Night Fandom Time.

Apr 26, 2011 20:33

Emma couldn't face the idea of staying another moment in Massachusetts, and they couldn't get a portal back to the island until morning.

Besides, Rhode Island was probably the last place anyone would think to look for them, and therefore safest. The hotel was also almost completely empty, so the manager was willing to cut them a deal to get two ( Read more... )

Karla was fairly drained and was already fighting off an impressive headache, but she had another job to do before she could fall over like she wanted.

"Sit," she ordered Peter. "Let me take care of that arm before you...I don't know, get a bone shard in the kidney or something."

Best bedside manner ever.

"You know, maybe we should just drop me off at an ER," Peter said, barely still conscious. "I'm not exactly sure I'm okay with people using their fancy powers on me another time today."

Still snarky and bitchy through the pain. Sadly it was his coping mechanism.

And yet, he sat down like Karla said.

"Do you want to wear a cast for the next few months?" Karla snapped. "Because if you're going to keep sassing, I can add a jaw-brace to the list of things you need."

Her harsh tone was at odds with the gentle hands she laid on his arm. A whisper of Healing-Craft was coursing through his body, an arrow of warmth that sped through him and alerted her to all of his injuries.

"And let you keep the bruises for graduation if you want," she added dryly.

"Not like I need to look nice for my mom," Peter said. It wasn't that she wasn't able to attend.

It was more that he made sure she wasn't invited because he was going to be skipping town before the ceremony.

He gritted his teeth a bit, but he didn't resist whatever it was Karla was doing. He didn't put it past her to actually break his jaw if she wanted to. Not that he actually thought she was likely to, but he was having a few trust issues.

The blue glow of her Craft settled into his body, easing away the pain, injury, and fatigue. His bones reset, the bruises faded, and even his exhaustion melted away--the kind caused by physical exertion, anyway. The mental and emotional weariness caused by everything he'd seen and done tonight remained.

"There," she said, and from her voice, she hadn't managed to get rid of any of her own tiredness. "Feeling better?"

"Physically," Peter said, honestly. He chewed over the word for a second, but he nodded and added "thanks. You?"

"Pretty beat," Karla admitted, giving a nod to his offer of thanks. "At least, I feel like I've been beaten."

Probably not the best thing to say to the guy she'd just finished healing, but then, he had been Healed and it wasn't like Karla was tactful on a good day.

"I just need to lie down for a week." And eat everything under the sun, but she was working up to that.

"Did... why do you feel like you've been beaten?" Peter said, tilting his head. "Did she get you, too?"

"You try to channel that much Craft while a building is burning down all around--" Karla stopped and processed what Peter was asking. "Wait--she?" Her eyes darted towards Emma and she dropped her voice a little.

"Is that what happened to you? I'd thought--"

Yeah, telling Peter she'd thought he'd gotten attacked by a few of the burly guards was probably not going to help.

"Ran up, tried to get her attention, and I got to meet a wall," Peter said. "That's not exactly something I'll be trying again."

There wasn't much Karla could say to that. He knew Emma hadn't been herself--hadn't been sane--when she did that, but knowing that and understanding it on a fundamental level wasn't quite the same thing. He'd been hurt, badly so, by a girl he cared about and there hadn't been a thing he could to about it. Not to protect himself, not to retaliate.

Nothing.

Maybe he should talk to Warren sometime.

"Are you going to be okay tonight?" she asked. "Here? With everyone? It's...a lot to take in, I know."

He absolutely should.

Pity he was already planning on skipping town at the nearest convenience.

"I've dealt with worse," he said, a complete lie. "I just need some sleep and some food and I'll be okay. Preferably not in that order, though."

"I think there's a plan to order a bunch of pizzas," Karla said. "You can have my share."

Until someone sat on her and made her eat until her body remembered how to function on its own. And then she'd claim to of the pizzas for herself and try to fight for a third.

"Do you like tea?" she asked. "I've got some that might help calm your nerves a little."

"...you're not eating?" Peter said. "And I'm more of a coffee guy."

Peter was just a tad suspicious of the idea of her not wanting at least a slice after all that stress.

"When was the last time you ate?" Peter asked, not thinking she'd snuck off to grab a hot dog at any point during the day or anything.
