Summary: Jared's sister knows his secrets before he does
It’s a secret. He doesn’t want anybody to know, not even his family. So he never says a word.
It’s almost too late when he does. His dream is almost gone.
It’s his future and he doesn’t know how to tell everyone about it. He doesn’t know what to say to his parents, what to tell his teachers or his friends. It’s not what they all want for him, what they have been talking about all through his senior year.
He has UT in his sights, actually thinks engineering will be it for him. Loves the subject already and tries everything to get the grades he needs. He is good at it.
He is also good at hiding what he really wants. He thinks no one would get it, no one would see that there is something else he wants equally as much as to go to UT. He almost succeeds. Almost.
Maybe he shouldn’t have let the magazine laying around, at least not with the page open and the address circled in red. Maybe he shouldn’t have let his sister talk him into watching this award show together with her. Images flashing in front of his eyes and in front of his mind.
Maybe he shouldn't have underestimated his sister that much. Or his parents.
When she comes running into his room, a letter clutched into her hands and a huge smile on her face he has no idea what to think or what could have happened to make he smile like this. He finds out a second later and is totally stunned.
When he goes and does this show, when he comes home with a manager and a possible new job in the film industry his mother just smiles, kisses his cheek and tells him that she loves seeing him this happy. His father hugs him, says it will be a lot of work and that college will always be there if wants it. His brother just smiles, tells him that he never knew how good Jared would look on screen and denies that later when the family sits together at a table in Jared’s favourite restaurant.
He thanks his sister with a huge bouquet of flowers and the promise to always support her with pursuing her dreams. He hasn’t broken that promise and never will.
When he tells her about Jensen the first time she smiles and says that she always knows his secrets before he does. Jared doesn’t ponder on that; there is no need to because he knows she will be there for him to find the right way.

Title: It’s the memories that explain things
Author
the_milky_wayCharacter(s)/Pairing: Jared Padalecki
Theme:
09 "Perspectives: Lives lived, chances taken"Prompt(s): 16. Dance
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: This is not true. It never happened and I don't own anything.
Summary: Looking through old pictures Jared understands some things
He thinks he remembers his first dance but then his mother tells him it isn’t the first time he ever danced. She sits him down when they go through the old photo books he is sorting through to decide which ones to take and which ones to leave.
She tells him he was three the very first time. There were new neighbours with two boys and a huge dog in the house next to theirs. Jared would go over every time the older boy had to practice the piano. He would be gone for hours and wouldn’t budge form the piano when they came to get him. He would sit there and listen, not move or blink or speak. Just sit there and listen to the music.
Sherri says he was in love with the piano, never stopped talking about it, talking about how cool it was and that he could hear things. She also says that they never really got what he meant with that. That he told them that every person had their tune for him and that he could hear that when he saw them.
The day the neighbour’s boy went to school Jared would sit in the living room by the window and watch the street for him to come back home just so he wouldn’t miss his chance at hearing the music again. The hours dragged on and Sherri tells him that she has never seen him so still and peaceful while being awake. But then he had gotten up, walked to the window, started to hum and sway to the music that was only in his head.
He would do that every day from then on until they bought him his own keyboard and the neighbour’s boy got his own friends at school and wouldn’t hang out with a three-year-old anymore. Sherri says that Jared didn’t even care anymore, too engrossed in his music, occupied with his little keyboard and the sounds he could produce.
Sherri also told him that since then he never really stopped moving or dancing slightly when there was music around. And Jared knows she is right. There is always some tune in his head, always some kind of soundtrack to things going on. Even when he is playing scenes there is a tune, or when he is watching his dogs or Jensen or his family.
They all have their tunes and notes and he always moves different around them. But Jared knows he isn’t a good dancer, he just dances so that he can hear. It’s connected in his mind, to see things, move to a tune and then hear the music.
He just never knew where it came from.

Title: Finding the way is never easy, but you are not alone
Author
the_milky_wayCharacter(s)/Pairing: Jared Padalecki (with some Jared/Jensen)
Theme:
09 "Perspectives: Lives lived, chances taken"Prompt(s): 19. Trust
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: This is not true. It never happened and I don't own anything.
Summary:Jensen has some issues, Jared is there to listen
There has never been an issue with this for Jared. He easily trusts people he has known for some time. It always went this way. He has found friends in school because he trusted them easily and showed it. He never really had to fight for trust either. It usually was mutual and never hard to achieve.
With Jensen though it is different. He can feel that Jensen wants to but doesn’t dare to give it. Jensen definitely has issues and at first Jared doesn’t know how to work around those. Jared has no real experience with fighting for things he wants. He usually gets them.
It takes them a while to really warm up to each other even though a connection has been there from the start. Jared likes that he can actually talk to Jensen, tell him things. Jensen always listens, always has something to add, to help Jared figure things out.
Jared tries to do the same for Jensen. It just doesn’t really work for a while. Well, not until they are well into season two and Jensen is finally comfortable to talk to Jared about his problems. But Jared knows Jensen still doesn’t really trust him, doesn’t know if Jared will be reliable and help or just run screaming. Jared can’t really imagine there to be anything that would scare Jared off of a friendship with Jensen. Jensen seems to see things differently though.
It takes Jensen being drunk and crashing at Jared’s newly acquired home for them to make a step towards real trust. Jensen has been talking for hours, doesn’t seem to be able to stop, and doesn’t seem to want to either. It sounds like he is taking a huge weight from his shoulders by telling Jared things about himself.
He talks about his childhood. About how religion has been defining his life and how his parents actually changed through the years, got more liberal and understanding. Jensen talks about how afraid he is of failure, not giving his best and people finding out that he isn’t really all that great. Jensen tells him about past relationships and why they never worked out, tells him about not really being able to open up to people.
But Jensen also tells him that Jared is different for Jensen, that he can open up and talk to him. Jensen likes that. Likes it a lot because he has never really had that before. Not even with Chris or Steve, who don’t even know half as much about Jensen as Jared does and know it, too.
Jared just listens. Is there and is present. It’s what Jensen needs.
The end up curled together in the couch. It’s the closest they have ever managed to end up and Jensen doesn’t seem to mind that anymore. He used to be wary of touches and loved to keep his personal space. Jared sees it as an achievement from his side that Jensen allows him close and actually initiates it these days.
Jensen snuggles closer, sighs and just stays where he is. It surprises Jared a little but he doesn’t complain, doesn’t do anything to stop it, and doesn’t even dare to talk. It’s nice and he doesn’t want to destroy the moment. It’s what he wanted even though he is surprised that he just realised this now.
Jensen is still a little drunk and Jared isn’t sure how much of it is the alcohol and how much of it is really Jensen. Jared never really thought about it this way. About being able to have Jensen this way. With the trust not fully there Jared never really believed it was where they were heading. But he apparently was wrong about that.
Jensen sighs again.
“I am sorry.”
“What for?”
“Not trusting you completely before. But.. I. have been branded, have issues and.. you are such an overwhelming force that it took me a while to get use to it. I trust you Jared. I really do.”
Jared doesn’t really know what to say to that, pulls Jensen even closer, kisses his temple and cheers inside when Jensen doesn’t pull away, allows it, even moves into it. Jared doesn’t care about anything else anyway, because he has Jensen there now and Jensen is actually talking to him. Really talking. And he doesn’t seem to be that drunk anymore. Jensen isn’t moving away, isn’t running from the things they will talk about now.
In this moment Jared feels like the greatest winner there could be. He has Jensen and he has Jensen’s trust. Jensen had his the first time he smiled at Jared and told him he was glad to be there with him.

Title: Camp time doesn’t necessarily mean fun time... only when it does
Author
the_milky_wayCharacter(s)/Pairing: Jared Padalecki
Theme:
09 "Perspectives: Lives lived, chances taken"Prompt(s): 22. Summer
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: This is not true. It never happened and I don't own anything.
Summary:Jared remembers that he hated camp, just not really why
Jared is eight when he has to go to camp the first time. It’s a hot summer, hot enough for him to not want to move away from the pool and the never ending supply of ice cream his mom has going. It’s Texas, it’s home and he has no school. So why should he move and go to a camp he doesn’t really want to go to? He has summer holidays and camp sounds so much like school and homework, especially when his father talks about Jared honing his talents and exercising them.
He doesn’t want to go. He wants to stay home with his brother and sister who are going to stay and spend time with their parents. Jared is jealous and he doesn’t care. He wants to have some time with his momma and daddy, too. And he really doesn’t get why he has to go to camp anyway.
His mom tries to explain it. Tries to tell him that he has a talent and that they are going to help him develop it in camp. Jared already hates it. It’s not even in Texas, this camp. He wants to stay home and spend his days lazing around and not thinking about anything.
But he has no say in it. Jared doesn’t understand it. He won’t understand it for a long time, not until he re-reads the evaluation from the camp years later. An evaluation that makes him blush and realise what his parents actually did for him, how they actually lead him towards what would become his dream.
But at eight Jared hates it. For all of a week. The week before he actually goes to camp and has the time of his young life. It’s an acting camp. It’s a camp where he can dance even though he has no talent, a camp where he can play music even though he just started, where he can act and be what he wants to be. It’s a camp that has all the possibilities he never got before.
A day in and he loves it.
He even writes letters to each member of his family about his time there. Later, much later when they are grown up and have families of their own, his brother will tell him how jealous he was when he got that letter. Jeff had been bored to death without Jared there and only Megan to keep company since their parents had to work.
Jared will go to camp for the next eight years and he’ll never really understand why he hated it before he even knew what it was all about. He will think back at the first time and will remember that this summer might have given him something he never knew he was looking for, that this summer might have given him a dream to go after.
