Four years and counting… a story told in pictures
There is not real reason for him to sit in the darkness of the living room other than the need to just be. It’s quite around him and he actually has the nerves and the time to think about things.
He sits on the couch with his laptop on one of his knees, the other leg stretched out with the dogs at his foot snoring slightly and Jared’s head pressed against his thigh. Jared is sprawled out over the rest of the couch, socked feet hanging over the arms rest, arms twisted in a way Jensen finds uncomfortable only looking at it.
Jared is fast asleep.
Jensen marvels at the trust this shows. Jared used to be fidgety through almost all of the first two seasons when it came to him falling asleep on Jensen. It was as if Jared was embarrassed by it, feeling like he was demanding too much of his best friend. It took a while to convince him that Jensen would never mind it, would never deny Jared such a simple thing.
It’s not one of their usual evenings. It can’t be because the season is over and they are still here.
Neither of them had rushed to pack up and get out of Dodge. Not this time.
There are plans to head back to LA soon, but nothing is set in stone. Not this time.
Jensen doesn’t even know why he is still staring at the screen, at his empty inbox. He was done answering mails some time ago. No real idea of how long he had just stared Jensen moves his finger, slightly, without real intent.
He ends up opening the files folder of his email account.
It’s been a while since he cleaned it out and there are files he recognizes are years old. Jensen doesn’t even try to think about what most of them are. The pictures though will make a good evening entertainment.
A lot of them are from his sister. Mack had been trying to prove a point since he became Dean and told her about Jared being his co-star. He has to snort at the first file he opens. It’s one of the few pictures he never showed Jared and he will keep it that way.
His snort makes Jared snuffle even closer to him. Jared’s head ends up on his lap and Jensen is a little stunned for a second. It’s by far not the first time this has happened but it’s the first time he is somewhere close to being awake to acknowledge it.
It’s not a bad feeling. Not at all.
Smiling slightly Jensen goes back to sorting and cleaning out the folder. Opening and closing mails, deleting things, creating new folders and saving files to somewhere else but his email account takes up most of the evening.
Jared doesn’t wake once.
Not even when Jensen finally reaches the only folder left. One that Mack has the last time she got her hands on his laptop and which obviously serves as the saving place for all her email attachments.
The day she had gotten hold of his precious computer had been a lesson. For her not to touch his things and for him not to trust her saying she didn’t change anything. Sending of mass email with dubious content isn’t something Jensen wants to repeat soon or ever.
Jensen opens the folder inauspiciously named ‘through the years’ and laughs out loud at what he sees. Jared grumbles, moves a little closer to the back of the couch, snuffles once and sleeps on.
Jensen is amazed. At Jared’s ability to sleep through absolutely anything and at what he sees in Mack’s email folder.
The mini preview shows pictures of him and Jared together. And only him and Jared. At various events and at various stages of their friendship. The newest one is only a couple of days old.
Jensen blinks and just like that he is back where everything started.
The second Eric closed the door of the audition room behind them Jensen knew it was the start of something new for both of them. The picture Eric took with his cell phone was the first one of them together. Back then Jensen would have never believed how many more would follow.
Now he is glad that he convinced Eric to print it out, send it to him as a file as well. He had forgotten how young they both were back then. He had forgotten how, after only half an hour of knowing each other, they had already something like a pattern going.
Standing close, almost touching, with goofy smiles and only eyes for each other. Or touching and smiling like there is nothing to it, and really, there was nothing to it back then. A pattern they have maintained for a long time now and Jensen thinks they won’t get out of it in the near future.
The second picture in the folder was the first one Mack ever sent him, asking how it felt to be so thoroughly hugged.
He remembers it like it was yesterday. The Paley thing they did. Jared had hugged him hello like they hadn’t seen each other in months instead of just a day. Jensen had hugged back with the same force, with the same intent of never letting go
Jensen doesn’t know how no one didn’t see it back then. He doesn’t know why it took them so long to see it themselves. And he wonders if it’s only him seeing things clearer now.
He clicks through the photos, smiles at their younger selves and realises how much has changed and how little is different.
Jared moves again and has now an arm slung over Jensen’s thigh, cheek pressed even closer. The warmth that seeps through the material of the jeans makes Jensen shiver a little.
He wants to resist the urge to just card his fingers trough the mop of hair so teasing close to the hand in his lap. He really wants to resist because it implies a closeness they never executed before. Never acted upon before.
But he doesn’t. He gives in to temptation and sighs at the first touch of silky strands on his skin. Lets the hair run through his fingers and remembers the first time he wasn’t able to resist anymore. And of course it had to be in public, for the entire world to see and for his sister to save the evidence.
The evidence of how far Jensen had already been gone back then. He sees it now and shakes his had. So obvious. So oblivious.
Jensen is surprised how good it feels to just click through the pictures and to just remember the situations. He isn’t one for living in the past but sometimes it’s nice to see little things that were there and that are still present.
When Jared moves again and accidentally knocks Jensen’s hand from the touchpad Jensen just grins and pats the head that is snuggling closer again. Jensen has the slight suspicion that Jared isn’t asleep anymore.
He looks back at the screen without acknowledging Jared or saying anything. It’s way too comfortable to do more than what they are doing now anyway. No reason to talk or move. It’s perfectly fine the way it is.
Of course he has to go and destroy it. Because Mack being the mean sister she was she had to send him photos with clear taglines. And really, how could one not think about ‘so pathetically’ in love when seeing the pictures attached?
Jensen groans and is about to close the folder and to hide his own pathetic self when Jared moves his head and looks up.
“You are so gone. Looking at me like that. Even on set.”
Jensen looks down, looks back up at the pictures again and has to agree. Not out loud though because that would really be pathetic. Jared has a point and Jensen will do hell to acknowledge that.
What he does though is to click to the newer pictures in his folder.
“You are one to talk.”

Jared laughs. A low laugh and hides his face against Jensen’s thigh.
“Oh God. No wonder everyone thinks it’s happening. Even your sister does apparently.”
“Huh?”
“Well, it’s obviously her tagline on the photo. Who else would send you mails tagged ‘happy couple’?”
“True.”
There is nothing awkward about this situation. Neither of them flinches away, moves away or blushes. Nor do they refuse to talk about it. It’s just a step that has been looming for a while now. Maybe right from the beginning.
They just move like they always seem to do now. They move in synchrony. Jensen pulls his other leg up on the couch as well, settles the laptop on to of his knees while Jared moves up and kind of slots right against Jensen’s side.
“Like in some of the pictures.”
“What?”
“We fit.”
Jensen blinks and looks at the small smile on Jared’s lips. It’s nothing less but heart-warming. Jensen hasn’t felt butterflies in his stomach in years. Not since the first time he saw Jared. He should have known back then. Should have let himself see it instead of moving the other path. He doesn’t regret it though.
Jared is his best friend. Jared will be his best friend, among other things. That much is clear.
“We are kind of pathetic there though.”
Jensen’s eyes follow Jared’s finger on the touchpad and he has to laugh when Jared opens Mack’s latest email. Jared knows his sister too well to no know the mischief she is constantly up to.
“My sisters sent the same email. So I know what they have been up to while we were trying to withstand hordes of fan girls.”
Jensen can’t help it. He leans back and laughs out loud. It’s such a sibling thing to do. To mock them mercilessly about a thing Jensen is sometimes secretly thankful for.
He looks at the photos attached and shakes his head.

“Pathetic indeed. I like them though. I really do.”
When Jared moves Jensen is surprised at all. He thinks he may have been waiting for it. May have hoped for it to happen some day. He just never really let himself believe.
Jared’s lips are soft on his. Warm and pliant. There is not hurry, no real urgency, just the desire to make it last. They don’t move much, just Jared turning toward Jensen, lifting his hand to keep them in place. Lips move slow and smooth until tongues meet. Caresses. Nothing else.
It’s so much less then anything Jensen has ever had and then it’s so much more because it’s simply. It’s true.
They kiss for a long time. Just them, just together.
And then Jared just settles back against Jensen’s side. Head on Jensen’s shoulder and eyes on the screen.
“This is okay right?”
“Yes. It is.”
“We will talk?”
“Yeah. But not tonight. Not now. Now is too good to let it go.”
“Good. So.. let’s go back to the pictures and how thoroughly they portray our pathetic love story.”
Jensen laughs, drops a kiss on Jared’s head, pulls him closer and re-opens the folder that had hold his attention for the past few hours.
Who said pictures never tell the truth?
Jared’s smile reflecting off the screen is enough for Jensen to not doubt anything he sees this evening.
He sees them.
He sees more of them, sees more pictures telling a story, sees a future.
