I don't think they're dead though, if you only smelled blood. Rotting corpse smells different.

Seems really impractical to injure them and then kill them somewhere else.

When a person dies here, it is assumed the animus stop the natural release of the soul and alter it - for the death toll - perhaps in another dimension. It's entirely possible that those within the city were killed and then ended and erased by the animus in their own realm.
