This is one of the many e-mails I received about the demise of my beloved radio station. This one is from Temple's listserv...
Just to let you know I got some breaking news today. As of February 24th, 2005 Y-100 is longer on the air. Radio One has decided to do away with Y-100 and move alternative music out of Philly.
If you care at all that alternative rock is being removed
from the area it is your duty to make your voice heard.
www.y100rocks.com will be the home for the fight. With a few
minutes of your time you can do your part to save Y-100, to
save alternative rock in Philadelphia, and to send a clear
message to Radio One that we will not go quietly into the
night, we will not give up without a fight. "WE ARE ROCK, WE
ARE HERE TO STAY, AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU OR ANY OF YOUR
CORPORATE CRONIES CAN DO TO STOP OUR VOICE FROM BEING HEARD."
THIS IS WHAT WE NEED TO DO:
1.) Go to www.y100rocks.com and sign the online petition.
2.) Send an email to
Alfred Liggins CEO of Radio One, INC.
ALIGGINS@RADIO-ONE.COM and
Mary Katherine Sneed COO of Radio One, INC.
MCSneed@radio-one.com
3.) Forward this email to everyone.
4.) Keep checking back at www.y100rocks.com for the latest news and information on the future of y100.
This isn't just about rock music. This is about 500,000
people who will no longer have a voice on the public airways.
Popular Local Radio Station Goes Off The Air
No Word Given For Move
A popular local radio station went off the air early Friday morning, with little notice. In its place is a hip-hop station with lower ratings.
Modern rock station Y100, or WPLY-FM 100.3, went off the air early Friday morning.
Now in its place is hip-hop station WPHI-FM, or The Beat, which owner Radio One Inc. moved from 103.9 into Y100's slot at 100.3.
Sources told NBC 10 that staffers were told Thursday that the station was going off the air effective Friday. No reason was given, the sources said.
Popular morning show hosts Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison said their goodbyes in the last hour of their Thursday show at 10 a.m.
The station then changed to a rap format for the rest of Thursday using the Y100 call letters.
Elliot and Morrison had previously signed a deal to move to WMMR 93.3 this summer.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer , among listeners ages 18 to 34, Y100 was seventh in the last Arbitron ratings, and The Beat was eighth.
