Power; Strength

Personality; Beat is the second most visible character after Neku, appearing in all three Weeks, and as such shows a lot of growth throughout his time in the Game.

When you first meet Beat it’s on the edge of an attack, the skater rushing forward without thinking, assuming Neku and Shiki are Reapers. But as soon as he realizes his mistake he apologizes, trying to make friends- until another passing remark has him up in arms all over again. In a way this is a microcosm of his personality over all. Beat is a fireball in a teenager’s body, all force and emotion.

When someone first meets Beat, there are a few things that come off right away: He’s a punk, loud, aggressive and thick as a brick. And these things aren’t really false. Beat faces everything in the most direct way possible, either by yelling, charging ahead, or even falling into blows. He doesn’t think about things often, and anything too complicated goes right over his head. But once someone gets to know him he shows that he can be caring, determined, forgiving (though he can also hold an awful grudge, usually with plenty of sulking) and oddly intuitive.

Still, in the game we find out that maybe he wasn’t always this way. He hints that before his death he was a lay about, with no goals or motivation in his life. His relationship with his parents was strained (mostly due to grades) and his sister Rhyme’s attempts at sympathy were seen as pity. He realizes, with some horror, how wrong his views on life are when Rhyme first has no idea who he is, and second when she is Erased to save him. It’s quite telling that his entry fee is Rhyme’s love for him- she is what he values most in this world.

And it’s for her that he’s even willing to fight his friends and do things he knows are wrong… even giving up his chance to live again by joining the Reapers. Beat is not above doing morally ambiguous things if it’s for someone he deeply cares about, yet when the time comes to kill Neku and Joshua he can’t bring himself to do it- at his heart he’s a good person, if a bit rough around the edges. He even turns agains the Reapers to save Neku (he may have called it a matter of fair play, but who knows), risking certain death. Sure, he might not have fully understood those risks, but still, he did it.

In the end, though the Game, he comes to understand living life rather then coasting through it. Because you could always lose it, or someone that makes it worth living. He gains true friends in Neku and Shiki, and learns to appreciate things more, becoming the decent, if dorky, kid we see at the end of the game.

[The video comes on to one bright blue eye glaring at it, it spins around as the owner of said eye plays with the bracelet]
