Note on LJ's quirks

I suspect that LJ is limiting your entry-size because there's hidden formatting in the word processor you're using for writing your draft in (i.e. lots of code that doesn't show up as being visible if you're using the Rich Text version of the LJ Post interface).

If you get a chance, it might be worth trying to save your draft in a simpler format (like RTF) and see if that might get rid of some of the needless formatting. LJ should have a character-limit around 40,000 characters per post, which averages out to something like 9-10,000 words. It might also be worth learning some really basic HTML (i.e. just the code for italic bold and underline) and using the HTML option on the LJ post interface.
