Avery was leaning against the wall beside the entrance with his hands in his pockets and his head down. He thought that if he kept his head down, no one would notice him and they'd stop asking him all of those ridiculous questions.
No, he was not gay. Yes, he was single.
"Hey," he said, perking up just slightly as he heard her footsteps.
"Actually, do you want to go outside?" he asked her, looking off in the direction she had came.
He honestly didn't feel all that much to going back inside with, well, everyone else. He was actually in the mood to go back to his spot by the courtyard.
He was following her. It only took a few strides before they fell into step with each other. He shrugged his hands through the pockets of his jumper and kept a steady pace as they left the castle.
"Thanks for coming to hang out," he said as they had walked most of the way. "I really appreciate it."
"Could have fooled me," Jen said honestly. It was true--Avery seemed like the kind of person that was comfortable for the most part. Once again, it just seemed like that to Jen.
"Let me tell you a secret," he said, smiling ruefully. "I guess it isn't as noticeable as I thought, but I'm pretty shy."
He tried to flatten his hair down slightly as a gust of wind came in before shrugging his shoulders.
"I wasn't much of an attention-grabber before I met Tracey. Now, it seems where ever I go people are asking me questions and saying things. I don't think people even knew I existed before."
"Before you met Tracey?" she asked, lifting an eyebrow. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear that was particularly bothersome when blown in the wind.
"When Tracey and I started dating, suddenly people knew who I was," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "I guess it comes along with all the drama that surrounded her and Bletchley."
The way he said the last word, it sort of snapped out of his mouth and he shook his head sheepishly.
"You and I both," Jen said with a roll of her eyes.
"But, Avery, people knew you even before Tracey. I mean, c'mon. You must have been aware of the swarm of girls that followed you day and night!" She nudged him a little, trying to make him grin at least a little.
He shook his head with an amused laugh. He would never not find that funny, he was certain of that. He looked to her with a glint in his eyes as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
"I must be blind then," he said. "Because I have never once noticed a swarm of girls following me around, ever."
No, he was not gay.
Yes, he was single.

"Alright," he told her, nodding his head as if that just proved it. "How are you?"

"It's all so annoying," he said agitatedly. "I don't really do well with attention."
