So I've been wondering why "feminism" is a bad word. I run into people all the time who make jokes at feminists' expense. Equality's not a bad word, so why is "feminism"?
Of course, words relating to women tend to get devalued already. Women are called "ladies" to mean "woman" or "gentlewoman" ("ladies and gentlemen, or "cleaning lady" or "Go ask the nice lady.") The male equivalent of lady is "lord." We don't call men "lords" unless they actually are.
Okay, so then we have "sir" and "madam" except a madam is a head of a brothel.
And I'm sure there are other examples I can't think of right now.
Then there's also all the bad words relating to women. It seems like most insults that include gender focus on women, even ones aimed primarily towards men (pussy, son of a bitch)
So in a sense it's not a big surprise that "feminism" has become a devalued word, just because that's how words relating to women go. But at the same time, it's so stupid. Wanting equality across the board no matter one's race, gender, sex, ethnicity or religion is not bad. If you think it is, you need to reevaluate some things.
