Wow. It makes so much sense now - John was failing because he was trying too hard to be perfect, and over-thinking every step instead of being in the moment :-) Love this series

Yes. John was technically good, but he was... technical. If you could splice or drop a particular spin from one program into another, you would not be able to tell them apart. And what he's doing is technically very hard, so he has every reason to focus on that. But it's time -- past time -- to go beyond.

OMG, I think he's got it.

And now I have versions of John flitting over the ice, singing I could have danced all night. I've got a sick brain.

Yes!

"... I could have spread my wings and done a thousand things I've never done before...."

In a bizarre sort of way -- it fits.

Okay, I apologise in advance for the following capslock, but:

EEEEEEE! OMG OMG OMG, HE GOT IT! *flails and squees like whoa*

It feels like I've been waiting for John to just let go and skate with feeling for ages, and now he's done it and I've got this utterly ridiculous grin on my face (and I'm at work, so I really shouldn't), and it's so perfect!

\o/ Finally! Which is a bit strange, because accusing John of thinking too much?.. And yet, clearly, he just needed to let go and be a little laid back (so to speak) about his skating.

...because accusing John of thinking too much?

Good point. I wonder why. Was it his early coaches beating discipline into him? Or was it his mechanical approach to skating, going through the moves with the precision of a chopper pilot doing a pre-flight check? Was he spending his joy on his jumps? Or was he too reserved, holding back anything that was too... him... from the public eye?

Maybe all of it.

Or maybe he didn't think that he could actually skate better, since it was all about jumps for him. Like he defined himself as a skater only via his ability to jump perfectly.

And I have no idea if what I wrote above makes any sense at all...

Oh, yeah, that does make sense. He didn't care about the rest, so he just did it "right" -- to get it out of the way and get to the good stuff. He didn't want the rest of it to cost his scores though, so got away with being technically clean.
