Somebody to love

Last year I read a short book by Scott Adams (the creator of the Dilbert comic strip) called God's Debris*. It postulates that the universe as we see it is, well, God's debris. Since God is all-knowing and all-powerful, can he destroy himself? In the book, Adams leads the reader through a thought experiment: what if God got bored with being so powerful (because with all that power, nothing can be difficult), so he decided to try the only thing that would challenge his power: destroying himself. Apparently he succeeded, and the Big Bang was the result.

It's a fairly absurd premise, but it brings up a good question: Why did God create the universe, and why did God create us? Did boredom lead him to create us as sort of a hobby? Did he blow himself up? No, I think it's way cooler than that.

Like the Queen song, God wanted somebody to love. For thousands of years, he invested himself in the lives of the descendants of Abraham, the Israelites. He was born as a human to a human mother and died for humankind in the ultimate display of love. We humans are referred to as Christ's bride. Think about that: he died for us - jumped in front of the gun and took the bullet - so that we would live. He loves us so much he wants to marry us! That makes me pretty excited.

You can download God's Debris here. It's worth a read, I'd say.
