I was driving down Knob Creek Rd. yesterday and I saw two little birds in the road. As I grew closer, they start to move out of the way. One is quicker to react than the other. It springs up and flies a little to get out of the way. The other walks a little towards the grass. By this time I'm right up at the second bird. I figure he's between my tires and I wouldn't hit him, or he would jump out of the way right on time as most birds do. I hear a slight ::thump:: but don't really feel anything. I look in my rear view mirror and then I see a few black feathers shoot up and fall to the ground. I hit it. I looked forward again, feeling badly that I killed the cute little bird. I looked in my rear view mirror to see if perhaps I just got its tail or something, but see something else in the road. The other shape was the second bird that went back to check on its friend. Now I feel terrible. Now the first bird is alone and its friend/brother/sister/mate is dead. Damn.
Everytime I used to pass road kill I would get a shiver. I didn't shiver this time. I just felt like a gray cloud shrouded me for a minute.
I shouldn't care too much about running something over with a car. You're not supposed to swerve unless its a big animal, like a horse or a cow or a deer. Perhaps something that stinks like a skunk. But not a bird. I heard it was lucky to hit a bird with your car but I don't feel very lucky.
Every once and a while I can see those feathers falling. Then I think of what kind of gore may be on my tires.... bleh. At least it was something small.
