Restlessness and discontent are the first necessities of progress.

I have been giving the idea of a strike some more thought. I am convinced that with a carefully honed message faxed out the various Boston newspapers and radios, along with NPR, CBS, etc., you could get national news attention. It would be impossible for the administration to ignore you. Add in your parents, and you could control the Board of ( Read more... )

I think before you start to gather the attention from national broadcasters and even parents and the school board you would need to see who you have support from (in the school). From there you need to create a mission statement or a set of demands.

After you have a solid mission statement and a common goal (with the demands in mind and on paper) you need to present them to the Board of Education. If they don't allow this you need to put something in the school newspaper and/or film something and put it on the air. You need to get attention and respect from the community before you have an outright walk out or strike.

There needs to be solid support and organization before you do anything of that caliber. In order to be respected by the newspapers and radios you need to have those things.

Work with the system, to a certain extent, to get what you want. Use it for your own purposes.

Another thing, despite no one really liking Mr. Fox, you need to gain his support too. There will be no change without the administrations support. I dont think humiliation will gain any positive change.

I see this as a project to work on. I dont see an immediate strike working. However, in the future it would be great to see communities all over MA and the U.S. demanding a better public education. How about also working with other local communities from the start?

Lawrence could use some reformation in their school system as well.

I totally agree with you and I tried to do that. But we have people like Jenn Soini and Kate Stead in my grade who are too fuckin' stuck up to listen to their peers. It won't work. It doesn't work.

However...Jenn Soini and Kate Stead are followers.

If you take a group of leaders (like yourself) who are willing to take the time and educate yourself on the issue and create a concrete argument then you can do something. Talk to people individually. See what they think. See where you have support. I'm sure there is a lot more support then one would think. Ask professors for help like Mrs. Ford and Mr. Beradino.

There are so many students at GHS who have no outlet for a voice and for an opinion. Give them the chance and they will speak. In order to make others feel comfortable about speaking out about this...you need one person to start it.

Kate Stead and Jenn Soini are only two people in a class of over 100 (am i correct with that number?). You can do a lot without them. And because they are followers...once they see that there is a mass of people behind this belief...i would put money on it that they would follow.

Now...i'm not talking about a huge revolution. Just some ground-work activism to start. Actually get the statistics and get the information needed to have something to base your argument on.

It won't work as long as you say it won't. And it will work if you say it will work. It just takes time, work, and passion.

Peace and Love

We have 72. It's lame. And it's not just Jenn and Kate, it's their whole group which makes up a good chunk of our grade.
