Stuff like that happens at the worst possible time, and it alway sucks real bad!
I'd still call him, and be like, "See that graceful exit I did there? Yeah, that was all for you, baby." And make a joke out of it. Ask him out, and tell him you can't make any promises not to FALL for him--*ba-dum-PSSH*
