what's goin' on?

Yesterday Naoko and I made dinner in Pat's honour. We made Japanese curry, and the secret is to add random things like ground coffee, orange juice, and bits of chocolate to the mix. Yum!

And I carved a whole chicken for this dinner.

Anyway Pat is the founder of Welfare Warriors, a group based in the US, she fights for the rights of single mothers.

I'm around a lot of feminists but not a lot of veterans from the movement. Pat is 63 and has lived through a lot. She was here to give a keynote speech to a bunch of academics, and said she never felt so uncomfortable in that space. She brought beautiful flyers and pamphlets that no one there wanted to touch. (We told her academics like boring pages of white and black.) None of the professors really wanted to talk to her , this crazy woman who tells things as they are and won't take anyone's bullshit.

Meanwhile these academics have been citing her and her work for years.

We were talking about how to do political advocacy through facebook. She asks what facebook is. We explain it to her.

"So it's how people connect with each other now?"

"Yes and you can post pictures and tag each other."

Pat smirks. "So you put up pictures. Talk to each other through the computer. What a fucking waste of time. There's a war going on!"
