You glance out the window of the taxi cab, not expecting to actually leave town as Mohinder had exclaimed the day before. You had assumed it was some sort of tactic to keep the city safe, but deep down you secretly hoped for it. Anything to keep him by your side, he's an exceptional man.

"Sylar?" His rich cultured voice rings in your ear and you suddenly hate the name you've adopted.

"Gabriel," you reply and there's a long pregnant pause, you can almost hear him thinking.

"Gabriel," Mohinder whispers and your heart skips a beat. It's the most beautiful thing you've ever heard and you ache for him to say it again.

"Yes," you smile as you turn to him, unable to hide your smile. "Gabriel Gray."

He nods, smiling in response. It's one of the first truths you've admitted and it feels so good. "Well, Gabriel." He repeats as he glances at the crowded street. "Where should we go?"

You pause; noticing how Mohinder is bundled under layers of clothing and you can't help but want to see him in his element. "Some place warm," you suggest. "Just drive south."

"Sounds nice," he nods as he thrums his fingers against the steering wheel and for a second you think this will work.

"As long as rush hour traffic will allow us," you chuckle as you glance once more out the window.

Mohinder replies to your remark, but you can't seem to focus on anything but the side street. From this angle you can see Kirby Plaza and it's calling to you- deep down you know that you are suppose to be there. It's part of your destiny.

You can feel it.

The cab comes to a stop at the light and before you can think of the consequences of your actions you leave Mohinder. You can hear him call after you, but you run off anyway and you hope that perhaps he'll understand why you have to go.

It's a quick jog and you take a deep breath, your eyes focusing on the one person you almost expected to be here, even if you've already killed him once before. Petrelli.

Everything suddenly falls into place, the pieces fit. This is what was meant to happen. The battle, the city gone in a blaze of fire, Mohinder-

You shake your head, trying to clear your thoughts of the man you have no future with. It's based on lies and you crave this more. The power, the need to evolve.

"Gabriel!"

You inhale sharply and your concentration falters as you hear Mohinder's voice. You glance over to see Mohinder standing to the side, his hand on his chest, his eyes wide as they lock with yours.

"Gabriel?" Peter repeats, taunting you and you force your gaze away from the hurt that reflects in your lover's eyes. "Stay away Mohinder, he'll only hurt you."

You close your eyes, concentrating on his taunting voice and not the concerned look of Mohinder's. This started long before you met him, and it must finish before you can have a future with him. If there is to be a future and at the moment you're starting to doubt that it's a real possibility.

The power continues to build within you, your hands glowing blue with the intensity, and you aim your hand toward Peter. You want more than anything to kill him and make it stick this time.

"No, Mohinder!" Peter calls out and your eyes snap open to see Mohinder in your line of sight, blocking your potential victim. Damn him.

"Gabriel," he says softly, lovingly, and it affects you more than it should. You suddenly wish you didn't tell him your name.

"Mohinder," you hiss, this isn't how it was supposed to happen… or maybe it is. That very thought stirs in your gut and you take a step back.

You drop your hand for a moment in contemplation and it's the wrong move. Peter pushes Mohinder away and shoots a blast of radiation at you. The same ability that you hungered for, but never took-Mohinder had stopped you, distracted you.

Using a wave of ice, you cool the heat and you're about to attack once more when you notice the faint radiation glowing over Peter's skin. He starts to panic and you can't help but laugh, it's not you after all.

You go to help Mohinder up when you hear something behind you and you turn. A sharp piercing pain explodes in your abdomen and you gasp in shock as you see that Japanese man standing before you. You cough up blood and your hand reaches down to the sword in your abdomen.

You fling the small man away and you collapse onto the ground. It wasn't supposed to end like this… not like this, defeated, dying. You close your eyes and then you look up. Above you, in the sky, you make out a streak of fire that shoots up into the sky and then it explodes, lighting up the dark sky. It's beautiful.

You close your eyes once more, they feel so heavy and it hurts to breathe. You know it won't be long, bleeding to death on the cold pavement. It isn't the death you thought you would succumb to.

"Gabriel," the voice is near, familiar.

Mohinder.

You feel a hand on your arm, warm, tender, and you know you don't deserve such kindness and you're waiting to wake up from this surreal state. "Mohinder," you exhale and you look up into his concerned face. "It wasn't me."

He nods, laughing bitterly.

"It hurts."

Mohinder snorts, "You deserve far worse."

His words ring true and you expect him to leave you. To let you die, slowly, painfully, alone. But, he doesn't leave you, he stays with you. There are blue and red blinking lights and then he leans in and kisses you. It's soft, loving, and nothing that you've experienced before.

There are voices and someone's moving you, pulling him away. The lights are brighter and there's a prick in your arm and then there's nothing.
