1.
A month.
It took Ohno a month to realize that he had been a jerk.
Without he realizing it, he was longing for her presence, missing her laugh, wanting to feel that loving stare she gave to him whenever they were together. But then, he just lost it.
According to the landlord, she had left the apartment she rented about a week ago. Ohno was back to square one, having not a single idea on her whereabouts.
Her last words to him echoed in his mind, making him feel uneasy and guilty all over.
‘I never want to see you again, Ohno-san’ was what she had said. But no matter how tough his ego was, holding back his desires to see Harumi again, he just couldn’t stand it. His mind was screaming for her. He needed her.
He wanted to see her. He wanted her in his embrace. He wanted to feel her warmth again.
And if he ever got the chance, he would never let her go ever again.
2.
But how can he have her again when he doesn't even know where she is?
All the roads she took. All her favorite places. He went, trying to trace her again, but no, not even a shadow, let alone, her.
And every single place he went to, the memories he had of her stabbed him right in the heart.
He still remembered how they used to argue over her favorite coffee flavor. He was very fond of that one flavor which Harumi never got why he was so fond of it. She ended up sulking by the end of the day, just because Ohno refused to buy just one for them to share. Yet, she still drank it, despite the fact that she hated the flavor.
God. He had let go of a girl who was so good to him. For him.
3.
On the third week since he started searching for her, he was about to give up.
Harumi had left, not a single clue was left for him to track her.
But maybe, god wanted him to learn from his mistakes.
He was waiting for the train when he saw her standing behind the same yellow line. His heart was beating crazy as if it was going to burst any moment soon. His mind was telling him to scream for her, but his subconscious was telling him to approach her and not say anything.
And when he did, only god knows how much broken he was, seeing her.
“Harumi,” he called her. She turned and threw him a disgusted look.
She responded, sounding so fragile despite how strong she tried to look. “It’s Harumi-san and I’m in hurry,”
“Just for a while.”
“I no longer have time for you, Ohno-san. Excuse me,” she said, trying to leave.
4.
It took Ohno more effort to get her back to her once favorite café.
Thirty minutes passed without words coming out of their mouths. He kept staring at her, noticing how those eyes lost its spark. She’s getting thinner, her face was pale without the make up. But still, he still found her as beautiful as before.
She sipped on her drink, sounding annoyed as she spoke.
“If you're done staring at me, I think it’s best for me to leave now,” she said, putting her stuff inside her bag.
Ohno stopped her. His hand gripped her hand but she pulled away almost instantly as they touched.
“Harumi-“
“Make it fast, Ohno-san. You won’t understand how bad it is sitting in front of you right now. You’re a jerk who made me hope for something beautiful only to crush it later. I’m done with you and you should be done with me, too.”
“But I'm not done, Harumi. Please, listen to me.”
She stopped and went to sit back down. His hand found hers again, gripping it, wanting her to know how much he wanted her again in his life. Harumi smirked, mocking him.
“What? Should I listen to you, Ohno-san? You’re a talented man. And convincing someone you love her is one of your talents, too. You betrayed me and I got hurt and I never want to feel that way again.”
“I love you,” Ohno said, sounding so desperate to convince her. For the first time since they met, Ohno said he loved her. The only three words that she wanted to hear from him when they were together. But then, Harumi chuckled.
“If I said I love you, too, will it be enough for you?” she asked.
Ohno nodded in response.
“I love you too, Ohno-san,” she said, pulling her hand that Ohno’s been holding. “But I've made my decision. I don’t want to be betrayed again. Also, before I'm completely gone, let me state the fact that you never really loved me despite of how much I loved you.”
“Harumi-“
“We’re done, Ohno-san. Stop looking for me. It’ll be useless.”
She stood up from her seat, taking her bag with her as she made her way out of the café.
After that, Ohno never saw her again.
5.
He kept waiting for her in places where he thought she'd be in.
6.
“Ohno-san?” A man approached him one day in a subway.
“If you’re waiting for Harumi, I beg for you to stop,” the man said in a serious tone.
Ohno frowned.
“You are-“
“I am her brother,” the man said. “Give my sister some peace.”
Ohno watched as the man left. His heart felt this stabbing pain. Without him realizing it, a trail of tears rolled down his cheeks.
7.
Three months passed and yet, he has never stopped waiting.
Days passed, not even a glimpse.
Until one day, that same man approached him again.
“You never stopped waiting, even though I asked you to?” he asked.
Ohno nodded.
“You’ve waited…” the man asked again. “Yet you never really tried to look for her? Do you really want her again or you just waited for her to come back without you making any effort?”
Ohno fell silent.
The man heaved a sigh.
“Follow me,” the man said. Ohno obeyed.
8.
“Here she is.”
They were in a graveyard.
“She passed away a week ago. Cancer.”
Ohno couldn’t believe his ears. They’ve met months ago and he still remembered how she she looked so beautiful. But she looked pale and skinny, as well.
His heart ached. His body shook. His hand trembled as he reached for the tomb. He gripped it as hard as he could as if he was gripping the one who’s name was written on the tomb. This time, no matter how much his ego was held him back from crying, his tears betrayed them as he cried. He fell on his knees as memories of her flashed before him.
Harumi's smile.. Harumi's tears. His regrets filled him to the point that he didn't feel that life was still worth living.
“Days before she died, she wondered if she made a right choice for not giving you another chance, Ohno-san. She cried, a lot. She asked the people around her.. she asked herself if she made the right choice.”
Harumi's brother patted Ohno on the shoulder. Ohno didn’t turn to look. Even as the man continued.
“On her last day, she told me. She believed she’d made a right choice. She loved you. And she didn’t want to see you cry. One thing that she hoped from you is that you’ll learn to love someone the way she had loved you.”
Silence surrounded them for a brief moment.
“Move on, Ohno-san. That's what Harumi wants for you to do.”
Ohno wondered if he would be able to do that.
