At work today a common question rang out. Do you smell something burning? As I work in an electronic repair lab, some times what we are testing will burnout a component. With my sense of smell I have a real handicap hunting down the source.
After ten minutes of searching I notice the screen of my work computer had gone dark and would not revive from the mouse or keyboard. The fans were still running but the Power Button and the peripherals were dead.
This computer runs half my test gear. If it dose not work neither do I. So I open the case and could finely see and smell what everyone was talking about. The South Bridge Chip Set had ¼ white hole melted into it and the Power Supply was missing it's 5 volt rail. I don't know with one caused the other, but this one two punch means the computer is toast. Burnt Toast!
I spent the next hour or so Frankensteining a replacement computer together. I have never seen this kind of damage before. It is not often that I write off a computer as a lost cause. Chalk one up to Spontaneous Computer Combustion.
