my best friend has been called a loser many times. she's made some decisions that many people don't agree with. i can't tell you how many times people warned my parents that my best friend was a bad person and that they needed to keep me away from her.
but i hung out with her anyway, and i help her when i can. she has been the only person behind me no matter what for 5 years. i can't say that about anyone else that i know. no one besides her has stuck with me for that long.
my parents see what i saw then in our friendship now, and don't listen to what people say anymore, because i didn't make a bad choice by being her friend and by being there for her if and when she needed me. everyone else mad a poor choice when they judged her solely on the mistakes they feel she made.
you're doing the right thing. don't question that. your mother is scared that it her behavior will rub off on you. but everyone messes up. and if we didn't have good friends to lend us a hand when were trying to get back on our feet, some of us would never get back up. maybe you should remind her of that.
