Marine Lab

Whatever happened to regularly updating my journal, I wonder? It's been so long I'm not sure what to include. Anyway, my oceanography class went to the Duke Marine Lab for a weekend. It was AMAZING. We stayed in the dorms there, which were kind of small, but at least they had AC, which was something I normally don't have. The dining hall was really tiny, but since they only have about 20-40 students each semester, they don't need a big one. The food was great and a nice change from the bland Marketplace dining hall for freshmen. Saturday morning we took a boat to Shackleford Bank, an 8 mile long island near the lab. We hiked pretty far into the interior of the island, but we had to turn back because of a big storm heading our way. We got back to the lab just as it hit, so we had the afternoon off. Sunday morning was spent trawling with nets on the ship, and we caught a ton of fauna. We caught: a dogfish (shark), a pufferfish, a flying fish, a jellyfish, a horseshoe crab, a flounder, a shrimp, several crabs, sea urchins, lots of fish, and several squid (they changed color and started squirting ink like crazy while whizzing around the bucket- they were MAD). That afternoon we explored the salt marsh and docks near the Marine Lab; we also gathered plankton samples. After that we examined our trawling catches and looked at our plankton under microscopes. It was extremely fun, even though I came back with severe sunburn (I don't tan; I burn) and poison ivy. I'm pretty sure I'm going to major in Earth Science- the department is awesome, and they get to go on all sorts of interesting field studies.

My group in German had to act out a scene from the novel we've been reading. At one point in the skit, one of my group members waved his cigarette (unlit) threateningly toward another student. I commented on how it reminded me of Stalin and his wife/cigarette scene in the film. Remarkably, they knew what I was talking about. :)
