I have noticed that when the dog is outside, and I move to come in from a cigarette, she will run headlong for the door. I do not mean that she will do so once I have opened it; I mean that she has it timed so that her snout will pass the plane of the threshold around half a second after my hand contacts the door. I am apparently just that predictable.
Now, this is not a small dog; she probably weighs a good seventy pounds. She also has a neurological problem giving her questionable control over any part of her abaft the ribcage. Combined, these two factors mean she handles like a semi. It can take her a good ten feet to stop or change directions significantly if she's going hell for leather.
I'm afraid that some day as I'm moving to open the back door, I'll be distracted by a quarter on the ground or a passing plane and fail to open the door at the appointed instant---and she'll go all Malbone Street Wreck on the door.
