After that meeting, things started to go rough. For Kei at the very least.
They were both given two years to prepare for their responsibilities, and that long span comes into a short amount as it would be the only time they'd be allowed to do whatever they want to do. After that, they were tied to the responsibilities.
"Don't do anything that will disgrace me Kei, I need you to use the time to properly set your mind to this world. Nothing else" Mr. Inoo told his son sternly.
Like it would even make a difference. Kei still stayed up all night studying for his proposals and monitoring the company's performance. Certain times that he'd be the one to talk with the shareholders and investors to settled accounts. It was a good training, in fact. But was also the worst way to spend the only time you can be free.
What irritated him though was their freakin' neighbor that didn't seem to care about the world at all. And continued bugging him, sometimes Kei wonders why he even talked to Kota before because apparently he could barely put up with the older one's attitude. He was such a hassle to deal with and the ways they look into life is different.
And Kota's point of view frustrates him the most.
Kota looked at life as a game. He can win, he can lose. Either way, he had to accept the outcomes. When he's given the break he uses it. The only difference was in life, he would take a break to try forgetting about everything while in a game, that he partly applies, he would use the time to think of strategies so his next round would be successful.
When he met Kei, he knew that there was something different about that guy already. Not that he hates the aura, rather he could sense just how chained the boy is in his life. It's not normal for a young adult like him, to be sitting all day long studying his life out when he has the time to take a break. He barely saw Kei outside their mansion.
So when one day, he realized that maybe he should just revive the memories they had together back then, he drove his car inside the Inoo's smiling to himself as he was welcomed in warmly. Their parents were the worst enemies in the business world, so it's kind of relieving that that fact doesn't affect the treatment given to him when he's in their territory. Even if it's insincerity, it wouldn't matter so long as he's treated properly.
He blinked at the house, he had the image of his young self running around the place wildly, but it was too vague that he couldn't even put up how it's done. It was too long ago, when the enemies were still friends.
Kei groaned as he heard a knock on his bedroom, he wasn't in for any disturbance at all but when the door opened, he still fixed himself.
"I didn't say you could come in already" he murmured lowly, still not looking up from his book. He hates it when people doesn't wait for his confirmations
"You're still on your bed and literally in pajamas, yet you're studying?" a familiar giggly voice rang through the room and that alarmed him, still he slowly looked up to maintain his composure. He tried hard not to frown as he saw Yabu Kota already approaching him. Alright, he had a point there, he was still on his pajamas and that gives him a good reason to be mad
"Why are you here? Who said you could come in?" he asked coldly, putting his pen down and moving away "Don't sit on my bed" he hissed but still Kota insisted and that just made him look away "Get lost, I don't want to see you"
Kota didn't really understand though why Kei treated him differently. Some time ago, he would be politely welcomed and entertained, but here he was being talked to like he did something so horrible to deserve it.
"Wow, says who? The princess who never gets out of her bedroom because she's afraid of getting her skin tanned?" he mockingly asked, only to be frustrated back as the younger one didn't even flinch at the words he used
"I'm not a girl. I'm not afraid of sunlight. And I am most certainly not the happy-go-lucky type that would go all over the place, wasting his time by bugging other serious people instead of preparing for something that would tie him a responsibility till he dies" Kei glared at him, and he just pouted
"Why are you always so cold to me princess? I thought you remember me? I don’t remember you but still, I don't think I ever offended someone back when I was little, so that doesn't give you any right to treat me so coldly." he reasoned out, plopping down the bed, missing the other's feet by an inch but this time he saw the flinching. "Why?" he asked curiously
"I don’t remember you. My dad said that we were friends back then five minutes before I met you. And your mom is too beautiful to be disappointed, so I pretended I knew you still" he said, pulling his knees closer to himself as he rested his arms over it and chin
"You look so sad" Kota whispered but it was loud enough for Kei to hear, and that caused him another frown
"You don’t know me Yabu, stop pretending like you know about my life. I hate how selfish you are." he looked away, wanting the conversation to just stop already. He didn't like where this was going.
"I'm not selfish Kei-chan, I'm just being fair to myself. I hate regretting so I'm making the most out of my freedom. You're the one who's selfish" Kota answered, mentally hitting himself for dragging this conversation further. He only wanted to annoy the younger one and nothing else, he was poking into his private life already and he himself knows just how annoying it feels when someone does that
"I've been working my life out, and you say I'm selfish? How the fuck is that possible?" Kei snapped, hitting his mattress with his fists
"You're selfish because you're depriving your own self the things that you're supposed to have."
"I can't be too focused on myself Yabu, I have a lot of things to consider before I become happy. You aren't supposed to expect me enjoying my childhood because unlike you, I already had the responsibilities to take, and not running around wildly in a country. Unlike you, I never had the chance to get away from this hell, so don't compare yourself to me. We're different" Kei gulped at what he said.
"W-"
"We're not friends, we're rivals. We're enemies, we have to claw on each other's performance sooner or later, so don't try to be friends with me." he glared one last time before standing up
He didn't say too much right? Even if he did, it was okay, right? Because after all, they were enemies and it was normal to hurt each other's side as much as possible. And god knows if Yabu Kota's purposely annoying him to get him down. But whatever.
"Kei" Kota called out making him turn again, he seriously doesn't know what limit is.
"What?"
"You look prettier with casual clothes by the way" Kota stuck his tongue out
And if Kei only didn't know about ethics, he would've thrown his slippers at the older guy, already.
