Yabu Kota ran around his playground wildly, trying to enjoy the time that his mother gave him to play around. However he just found himself standing in front of the fence that separates the him from the Inoo's mansion, he bit on his lower lip and stepped backwards trying to gather the strength he needs to do this.
"Kota, what are you doing?" Mrs. Yabu immediately called the attention of her son, as she saw him readying to throw his toy car over the fence.
The six year old looked at her in wonder, and although they weren't that close; she could tell the sadness that was lingering around her son's eyes. It felt lonely, for the first time. She couldn't blame him at all, it'd been a whole month now since her closest friend died and Kei hadn't gone out of his room since then.
"You can go and visit him now" she finally said, and the little boy didn't waste any time as he ran back inside their house.
..
There was a knock in his room, and Kei just sat up ready to make whoever it was to leave. But the door immediately opened, Kota's head popped in with a grin.
"Why aren't you going out anymore?" Kota asked, sitting on the bed. There was a complete silence in the whole room, something that never happens when they're together. He stared at his best friend carefully and felt displeased at how thin and pale he grew. He didn't look like he was having a life "Your mom's never going to be happy to see you like this" he murmured, touching his friend's hand only for it to be yanked away. "You can have my mom if you want" he shrugged his shoulders trying to lighten up the mood, but that just caused the younger boy to glare at him,
"I hate you" Kei simply said, and he felt something inside of him twitching. It was the very first time somebody ever said that to him, and he never knew that was how heavy and sad it felt. He took a deep breath, trying to gain his composure, and say something to console his best friend, but Kei beat him to it "I know that you hate your mom because she's so cold towards you. But Kota no matter how cold she is, how uncaring she is…she's still there beside unlike my Mama." his tears were already visible, and that made the older one gulp in nervousness. He just made someone cry.
"Wait Kei, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"
"I hate you Kota! Go away!" Kei screamed angrily for the first time, and without thinking twice he swung his hands up and pushed his best friend away.
Kota tried to hold on something, but he already lost his balance. The force was strong and very unexpected, and that ended up with him hitting his head on the floor as he sprawled his body. He was still young, and the pain he just got from being told off didn't help at all to stop himself from tearing up, the next moment he knows; Kei's already staring down at him coldly as he continued brawling for his mother.
"Kei!" a stern voice shouted with the door swinging open. Kota tried to stop crying and just sniffed as he was pulled up from the floor. "Are you okay?" Mr. Inoo stood him up properly and his touch felt cold despite the intention of calming him down. Kota hasn't even answered yet, when the man's face turned serious as he turned to the boy standing already at the side of his bed
"Wa-" he wasn't able to stop it anymore, he was too small. A slap landed on Kei's face, throwing him back to the bed and the older boy watched as his eyes started to tear up and soon he was crying just as loud as Kota was doing a few seconds ago.
Kota held on the his shirt tightly as he watched how Kei's father yanked him up from the bed again, and started shaking as he was shouted to stop crying. Being the child that he still was, Kei continued to let out his emotions and continued crying for the person he wanted to help him…he was never treated this way when his mother was still alive.
"Kei" Kota called out again, hoping to stop everything already as Mr. Inoo dragged him to a corner, forcing his whole body to face just one direction
"Face the wall and don't move unless I say so"
Kota gulped as the man turned to him, and tried to smile. He trembled in fear as he was gently guided out of the bedroom, and he looked back one last time to see his best friend sniffing on the corner he was left to. Mr. Inoo sent him back home.
..
In the business world, the fight for the fittest is staid. Even if you were the worst enemies, if being together means succession, it wouldn't matter if you're so fed up of each other…you'd be willing enough to share a house with them.
In their case though, the partnership that turned to friendship slowly went to rivalry. The Yabu and Inoo's partnership separated completely and thus the fight on taking over the country's economic development started. The closeness closed to antagonism.
And whoever is affected, it wouldn't matter. So long as the money continues to flow, and the competition of who would penetrate the next generation continues, the war will never end. The friendship and things they shared together will all be in vain.
"Kota, you will go with your mom to the states and will study very very hard for father, right?" Mr. Yabu asked his only child, and he was glad that it earned him a determined nod
"But how about Kei? He'd surely be sad if I leave him as well"
The sober expression of his parents came and he knew that there would be something that they'll say and he wouldn't like it one bit.
"Kei is your enemy now, you have to out power him from now on" his father sternly told him, no longer listening about his questions of what is really going on. He was never allowed to go out of their house anymore, and the only time they allowed him, he had to ride the car going to the airport. He stared carefully at the closed gates of the residence next to his', gulping in regret as it looked so dull now that the gorgeous aunt he used to have left them to rest.
..
Kei protested as his toys were taken out of his room, he tried to run after them but was blocked by his father who grabbed him on the arms.
"You're never going to play anymore, you understand that?" his father's grip on his arms grew tight and he squirmed at it "From now on, you will study how to be a proper heir and will never act childishly" he shook his head and he was hit on the legs.
"Yes father" he trembled in fear of being hit again.
That night, he sneaked out of their mansion and ran to the Yabu's for help, he wanted to apologize and see his best friend, but his heart sank as the caretakers told him that Kota was sent the US last week. He wasn't even informed about it, nor did his best friend say a proper goodbye. True that he did something cruel, but Kota saw that he was punished for it…he didn't need to be so mad and going as far as not saying goodbye.
His father stood in front of the main door as he got back home, and that night he knelt in front of his father's desk, arms stretched and palms facing upwards as thick books were put on each side. That was his punishment every time, especially when he doesn't get a perfect mark on all his classes.
"What should I give you as a reward? Name it." his father said looking at his grade report
"You stay away from me" the six year old huffed out, eyes staring coldly at his father.
