MESSAGES

From: Jones, Martha
To: Jack
Subject: Visit
Date: Wednesday 20th February 2008

Alright Jack?
Wouldn't you just know it, there's been a crash in the NHS filing system and loads of patients' data has been lost... including all the toxic shock cases I flagged up in your area. After a period of chin-stroking and saying 'Hmm' to myself, I've decided to bring my visit to your place forward. If these deaths are connected then it looks like someone could be stepping things up, so I'm coming basically right away before anyone else dies (hopefully). I should be there by the end of the day as long as I don't get held up here. Put the kettle on, would you? Milk, no sugar.
See you soon!

Martha

From: Harkness, Jack
To: Ianto
Subject: Visitor
Date: Wednesday 20th February 2008

Hey
I've got a friend coming into town tonight, a VIP from UNIT. She's gonna be working with us on this spate of toxic shock deaths. Could you book a hotel for her please? Someplace nice, with round-the-clock room service, close to the Hub. Dunno how many nights for. Make it two. Ideally I'd like to take her for a meal, but you just know something will come up and there won't be time. Book something anyway though, tomorrow night.
Don't get jealous! She's an old friend. Her name's Martha Jones. Maybe she's a relative of yours? :)

Jack

Torchwood 3

Volume 73, Week 6

Alien activity: Alien parasites called Mayflies. A medical research centre, The Pharm, had been conducting trials using a drug containing these parasites. Good news: they cure all known diseases. Bad news: the Mayflies then hatch and eat you from the inside out. And not in a good way.

Alien technology: The ‘’singularity scalpel’’, which Owen used twice to remove a Mayfly from its host body. The first removal involved some slight exploding. Thankfully the second worked perfectly, and he was able to save Martha’s life. If we’d let anything happen to her... oh, that would have been bad. We quite literally owe her the world.

Rift activity: Within acceptable levels.

Security: Must speak to Ianto about using names from ‘’Sex and the City’’ on fake IDs. Last week he sent me into an alien smuggling operation as ‘’Mr Big’’, without telling me. Wish I knew how he kept a straight face. I’d give him a stern talking-to, but I think he enjoys that too much.

Staff: Owen Harper was killed in the line of duty. He saved Martha’s life, and sacrificed his own. That’s the Owen I know, the Owen I recruited, the Owen who would scream right in the face of the universe if it meant he could save a few more people. We had our difficult moments - he did kill me once, after all, although I probably deserved it a bit - but through it all, I knew that he always did what he believed was right. I love his fire, his passion, his sheer, infuriating bloody stubbornness... I’m sorry Owen, I let you down. But I’m not going to let this go. We didn’t get to say goodbye, and that just doesn’t work for me. This is NOT the end. I don’t care about the rules, what might happen, what might go wrong. You’re on my team. And nobody gets to take you away without my say-so. So hang in there. The Captain’s coming to get you.

Capt. Jack Harkness.

[ARTEFACT DESCRIPTION]

Item #2006/564
Author: Costello, S

Artefact found by Toshiko Sato and myself on person of ET visitor (cross-ref: lifeform #2006/97), probably arrived via the Rift (cross-ref: incident #2006/243). The visitor’s purpose is unknown, cause of death probably that it unexpectedly found some aspect of Earth’s atmosphere toxic. Routine locate-and-cover job, no witnesses.

This is one of six items we’ve kept in storage (cross-ref: items #2006/561, #2006/562, #2006/563, #2006/565, #2006/566). Its purpose has been the subject of some disagreement among the team. My conclusion is that it’s a covert weapon: the monitor on the top seems to be a targeting system which sees through solid objects and sends its destructive energy directly to it regardless of what’s in the way, enabling the bearer to, for example, hit a target from the other side of a wall.

Tests in the weapons range were successful up to a point, but ultimately abandoned due to our inability to make it work with full precision, or indeed any precision (cross-ref: damage report #2006/339, expenses claim #2006/572). This is one of those which may prove incredibly useful should we ever stumble across an instruction manual, but until then it should probably remain in storage.

Addendum by Harper, O: You’re wrong. Sorry Suzie but you are. It’s something medical, I’m telling you. That gauge in the corner of the monitor’s for vital signs. Bet you twenty quid. Bet you a whole week’s worth of pizza. I’m serious.

Dr Aaron Copley BSc, Phd, D.Sc

Education

Graduated from Sandford High School, California in the spring of 1969, with a full scholarship to Harvard University.

Studied Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard for three years, graduating in 1972 in the top 1% of his class with a First Class degree. During this time, worked with Dr F.R. Minchin on several published papers which revolutionised the way we look at Molecular Biology. This included research on the regeneration of enzymes which lead to the successful stimulation of limb regrowth in a laboratory mouse.

Aaron Copley was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship in June 1972 to continue his studies and research at Trinity College, Oxford.

Now internationally recognised for his work in the fields of biological chemistry and molecular biology, Copley branched out in pharmacological research, specialising in anti-carcinogenic biological solutions which led to the successful remedy of liver showing signs of early carcinoma. While attending Trinity College, was awarded a fellowship of the University as a result of visionary research in biological science. A collection of his research papers were published by the College press to accompany the honour, and were received well by his peers.

Returned to Harvard in 1974 to complete his doctorate, winning funding and backing from major pharmacological authorities and the US Government along the way.

Appointments

In 1975, had a falling out with FDA following their injunction on the development of a drug that had the potential to rejuvenate nervous cells in mammals, and fought a court order that imposed a ban on the drug’s research and development, only to lose out and have to abandon the project.

Lectured and held residency at John Hopkins, from 1976 to 1981, becoming a fully fledged  professor of Bimolecular Chemistry and Biology in 1979. Throughout his residency, Copley continued to carry out research and develop an understanding of biological chemistry and pharmacology, publishing papers along the way and taking a sabbatical in 1980 to work on and help diagnose a mystery illness, which would later be identified as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Received his D.Sc from Harvard in 1981.

Headhunted in 1981 to work for the US Government to consult on biological weaponry and defence. Details of this period are largely unknown but it is thought that Copley helped to develop a lethal strain of biological nerve gas which to our knowledge has not yet been used. During this time Copley largely disappeared from the academic and scientific worlds but still kept strong ties with Harvard University of which he remained a patron, and guest lecturer.

In 1992, he returned to Harvard to become a full professor of Molecular Pharmacology where he remained for 11 years, whilst carrying out research and writing academic papers. One of the most prominent during this time was a paper on the effects of new compound which increases alveoli function in the lungs decreasing the risk of fatality from Tuberculosis.

Left Harvard in 2003 for undisclosed reasons. Came to the UK to set up Pharm : Pharmacology, Health and Research Medicine clinical research centre in July 2003 - a private public partnership between the Government and a consortium of big pharmaceutical companies.
