Texts From the Great Beyond

Jack was startled when the text came through. He had not heard from anyone in months and the sudden sound from his mobile  frightened him, but his heart stopped cold in his chest when he saw who the text came from. It just wasn't possible, but the display said it was so.

-------------------------------

New message: Ianto

Just to update you. I am dead. So your probably gonna have to find a new roommate.

Who is this? How did you get this phone?

What do you mean? It's me, Jack.

How can it be?

Because I'm texting you.

But you are dead.

I know. I guess my bit of humour fell flat.

The dead can't send text messages.

The rift says otherwise.

Why now?

Because it's time and I know what you are thinking about doing.

How can you know?

I know everything.

Why shouldn't I? You and Steven are dead and it's my fault.

It's not your fault. I chose to follow you and you were put in an impossible position with Steven. Don't blame yourself.

That's easier said than done. I'm sorry.

Stop with that. There is nothing to be sorry for.

There is plenty to be sorry for. I lied when I said I hated the word couple.

Don't Jack. Don't say something you don't mean.

But I mean it. You know I've always hated labels, but saying it wouldn't have put a label on us it would have been admitting what had been in my heart for a long time.

Please Jack, don't. It's too late to do anything about it.

It's never too late.  We were such idiots. We wasted so much time.

We are damaged goods.

But we worked well. We were good together and not just in the bedroom.

Yeah. You showed me there was happiness after all the pain.

There won't be happiness for me. Not after this pain. Once you go Ianto you never go back.

Okay that was cheesy (even for you) and you are distracting from what I want to tell you.

I'm always good at distracting you, especially when it comes to that little spot behind your left ear.

JACK!!! Let me talk.

No. I know what you are going to say and I refuse to do it.

It's no way to live.  You love living life.

But I love you more. I don't love life anymore.

One day you will. You just have to hold on.

It hurts too much.

Then do it for me. You are sexiest when you smile.

That's not fair to ask of me.

It is. You have my permission to move on and be happy.

I don't want permission. I'm done with it all. I don't want to love anyone else.  There will never be another you.

I should hope not. That would be creepy.

Can you be serious for a moment?

You are impossibly stubborn Jack Harkness.

I love you Jones, Ianto Jones.

Don't.

When do you have to leave?

Now. Jack, please be happy. Don't waste times on regrets. Just know you gave me the best years of my life.

A life that was cut too short.  There could have been so many more good years ahead of us. I could have shown you things that would have taken your breath away.

Please stop.  You're breaking my heart.

It hurts doesn't it? A broken heart.

It's a pain that doesn't heal. I want you to be the Jack I fell in love with. It's my last wish for you. Goodbye, my heart.

------------------------------------

Suddenly the lights in the room when off and everything was plunged into blackness. Even the mobile shut off and the texts from beyond were lost forever.

Then a warm breeze blew through the room and the familiar scent of coffee and vanilla musk pricked Jack's nose. A set of ghostly arms wrapped around the now crying Captain felt a pair of soft lips brushed against his.

All while the final words of Ianto's last text echoed in Jack's head with those sexy Welsh vowels he missed so much.

Goodbye, my heart.
