The Conservative memory: once again bitching about fictional characters

I hadn't been paying any attention to this flap because, well, I really don't care. But listening to Headline News just now, I actually heard several sentences which clued me in to what's going on. Apparently, actress Jennifer Aniston, in a current movie, plays a single woman who decides to have a child without having a spouse. And then the actress herself said there's nothing wrong with that choice (or under certain circumstances, whichever). The conservative pundit Bill O'Reilly needed to tell his audience just how wrong he thinks Aniston is.

After hearing those few sentences, my brain said "Hmm, this sounds familiar. Wasn't it Candace Bergen playing Murphy Brown against someone in exactly the same argument a while back?" So I Googled Bill O'Reilly Jennifer Aniston, and the first hit was Bill O'Reilly vs. Jennifer Aniston Mirrors Dan Quayle vs. Murphy Brown on CBS. So I guess I was right, and it is an echo of the past.

Is there some unwritten rule in the Conservative mind-set that demands public displays of stupidity from time to time, in order to keep the rank-and-file in line? At least this time around he's complaining about a real person who agreed with the choice, rather than fighting against the fictional character. But really, Bill, what's your point? And do you think it'll make you look any better than Dan Quayle looked after running his Murphy Brown campaign?
