Well holy crap! It's less than a month until we head to Spain for Hardcore Till I Die in the Sun 2009! It's going to be the most mental week, clubbing all night and beaches all day! Fun in the sun as they say. I'm getting really nervous too. I have a few shows before we leave, a couple here in Seattle and one in Phoenix, where I can test the tracks out one last time live before Spain. I shouldn't be worried, most of the tracks in the set have been solid parts of my PA for the past few months and go over pretty well. But I sometimes wonder how much things will carry over from my hometown across the pond. Here I have the opportunity to build up support, kids get to know the songs and know some of the words! In Spain it will be the 1st time many of these people have ever heard any of the tracks, and I worry about how a more seasoned audience might take to hearing new material.
The dance scene is weird like that, you gotta keep pushing things forward, but just slowly enough that you scare away your audience. They say they want new and fresh, yet they respond best to the 10,000th remix of Daft Punk's "One More Time". The job of the DJ/Producer is to walk that fine line between both worlds. I hope I do a decent job of it. I am reminded too that I have a somewhat skewed perspective, as I rarely do straight DJ sets with other people's tracks. The PA has been my focus for the past year, so I always wonder how out of touch I am. I still buy new tracks and spin at home, but without that crowd interaction it's difficult to tell sometimes what gets a crowd moving.
Oh well, little to be done but move forward. Each day gets me just a little more nervous, but hopefully by the time I am set to play I'll be past all of that. I usually find calm about 30 seconds before I play anyways ha ha ha!
