Something about the things Rhinox told Optimus made me think of Wilson from House. Rhinox is an enabler! D: Rattrap will never be as awesome as House, though.

You nailed it. They've been friends a long time -- doesn't mean it was a great friendship. It just survived because Rhinox was lonely and Rattrap has terrible luck meeting people he can trust. Now that things have changed, their whole dynamic is coming under strain.

(Eh, House is a jerkass with some redeeming qualities. Rattrap is a jerkass with some redeeming qualities. And they both save lives while being assholes about it. Really, there's not a whole lot of difference when you think about it.)

Oddly enough, the scene between Rhinox and Optimus surprised me. I think it's because I didn't realise that Rhinox and Optimus were friends before the beast wars. I had thought that Rhinox and Rattrap had been the only ones who really knew each other before venturing off. Certinally I'm not sure if Rattrap and Optimus had served together before, seeing Rattrap slowly building up respect for Optimus during the series ( ... )

Optimus refers to him as "old friend" in the show. They knew each other on Cybertron. Probably a working relationship, albeit a close one -- I doubt Optimus has ever been to Rhinox's home or met his roommate. At most, Op and Rattrap might have had a passing acquaintance, but they wouldn't have been friends. They were two entirely different people in Rhinox's life. (My husband made a lot of close friends at work, but I hardly met most of them. Likewise, he doesn't know most of my Internet friends.)
