"Couldn't make it."
"Let me guess - a hot date?"
"Then he'd be here," Colby said. "Nope; remember how he's a Big Brother for kids in need?Well, they needed him tonight."
"Good reason," Nikki granted. "So it looks like -"
"Nope, neither of us is dateless," Colby said, pulling something out and -
Is that one of those corsages that go on the wrist? Nikki wondered wide-eyed, frozen to the spot.
"Need a hand, Granger?" Ian asked, stepping up to their table.
Nikki pulled her hand back now that Colby was distracted. "I'm not dateless," she told Colby.
Colby nodded.
"And no way are you using our old relationship to make Ian pay for dinner."
"Wasn't my plan either."
"No?"
"No," Colby said.
"It's like the Cash Cab - he called a friend," said Alice Chen, joining them at the table. "Ian."
"Alice," Ian said.
"Granger," Nikki said, "you'd dead."
"I know the perfect spot to hide the body," Alice said.
"If you'd asked me," Ian told Colby, "I would've advised against this whole thing."
