A real hair-raiser

WHAT was he thinking? Zack Fleishman knew he was in for a tough time the moment he was drawn to play local hero Wayne Arthurs in the second round of the Australian Open yesterday, so why go and make it worse?

He had his hair dyed bright red, white and blue for the occasion.

All of which was meant to symbolise American national pride, except that the crowd kept chiding him about having the French tricolour on his noggin.

"I fully expected it," he said later of the response in the cauldron of Margaret Court Arena. "No hard feelings. It's kind of a ridiculous thing to do, and it's probably never been seen before. There were little jabs here and there."

Actually it is not a first for Fleishman, who has graduated from the Challenger circuit. When he was at UCLA, he used to dye his hair in the college's blue and yellow colours; even have the ball boys do the same.

"I have a history of doing it," he said. "I did it a lot in the juniors playing in big tournaments for the Sunshine Cup, which is like the junior Davis Cup. I feel like it spices it up a little bit. I like to have fun on the court as much as possible. I feel like tennis is too much all-white clothing. The crowd get to put on the wigs and yell, do that kind of stuff. So I figure the players can have fun every once in a while as well."

YY say: U might want to consider Singapore national pride for Chinese New Year ??? LOL
