OLIVER Stone has told friends that Tom Cruise won the lead role in "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) by telling Stone he was born on July 3 (1962), and that it was karma for him to get the part. Stone was struck by the coincidence but later regretted casting Cruise when the movie, despite raves, disappointed at the box office.
