33DC Day 32: Shapes
I saw something
similar to this on Tumblr and have been wanting to try it - I call it "windows;" not sure if it has a polish-world name. It involves a few coats of a clear type polish, then "windows," in this case rimmed in gold, through the base color to the bare nail. The mani I saw had just black squares rimmed in gold; I added triangles and studs on my thumbs.
My "bare nail" color is actually a cool sheer nude with a crazy awesome blue sheen - Sally Hansen Salon Sheerly Beloved. I picked it up at a second-hand store for $2 a long time ago, thinking I'd use it for frankening. But I couldn't get the blue sheen to come through when I added another color, so I forgot about it for a while, then decided to try it for the window technique. It makes me want to go bare! The icy blue sheen is really cool, the nude color is perfect on my skintone and blends imperfections a bit. Wish I'd taken a photo of it by itself - was late at night :) Unfortunately I have no idea where you get this; I've never seen this line before, so it's possibly a nail salon exclusive or very old.
You can see the blue sheen a bit in my outdoor shots, but it's even better under incandescent and diffuse light from my shades (chipped my pinkie in the process - oops!)
I freehanded (with practice) the windows with Color Club Muse, which is a tad lighter than black and fast becoming one of my favorites; it's got that deep neutral almost-black grey withou the harshness of deep black on my very light skin. I used a nail art brush to carefully paint the gold around each window; I used Sally Hansen Golden-I (Covergirl Golden Opportunity is a total dupe as well). I was proud of myself for managing to freehand this stuff not only on my left hand, but also my right! It looks crappy, but at least they match!
Finally, added some gold square studs to my thumbs for added dimension. They're from Born Pretty store, in this trusty silver/gold square/circle 2mm
wheel.
I absolutely adore this technique - It's pretty easy even to someone like me who is horrible at freehanding. You can use a gold nail art pen or gold striper if that's easier for you; I also think gold striping take would be cool, if you have the patience for all that cutting and tweezing! I also adore Sheerly Beloved - it's definitely worth picking up
from Ebay or somewhere if you need a sheer nude with a little something extra.

One more day to go guys! I'm going to be a little late with it - caught a December bug :( - but I'm really excited about Day 33!
