Nailed the Cover: "The Round House" Louise Erdrich Nail Art

Working at a library, I get inspired by book covers all the time. I've been meaning to start a series of nail art based on book cover art, and I decided to top it off with one of the neatest cover designs I saw on a new book last year: Louise Erdrich's "The Round House."

You may have guessed from the previous entry I was looking for a copper crackle to go over grey to mimic the jagged copper bark chips swirling on the cover. Sadly, I wasn't able to find a good one, plus I couldn't get it to crackle in a spiral like the cover image. So instead, I decided to hand-paint some different-size lines of Julep Zoe, in a circle on my thumb and swirling in different directions on the rest of my fingers. The base grey is Orly Decoded. In hindsight I think I should have used a smaller brush; the shards got a little lumpy. But even though it's not quite like the cover, I like the pattern it does create, esp from a distance!

I have not actually read "The Round House." I've read shorter works by Erdrich and enjoyed them, especially her short stories. I started it, but I just wasn't in the mood for this book; I put down books a lot just because I'm more interested in a different book at the time, not cuz I hate them. Anyway, a lot of the covers that inspire me artistically aren't necessarily books I'd even read - many books have really amazing visual design on the cover, but I'm just not interested in reading what's inside. You really can't judge a book by its cover, but nail art allows me to appreciate the cover for it's own sake! After all, it's someone's job to create the visual design and sometimes original art that goes onto a book cover, whether or not the writing is any good.
